TEASER
1. EXT. BASIC MEGA-STORE – EVENING, APPROX. 7:30 P.M.
A slight man dressed in warm clothing, wearing a jaunty Santa cap, stands next
to a bucket hanging from a stand. He is ringing a bell and shouting, “Ho!
Ho! Ho!” repeatedly. He is a seasonal BELL RINGER.

Shoppers hurry past him, in and out of the store. When he is able to make eye
contact with one, the shopper usually dumps some change into the bucket. He
glances down into the bucket. It is about half full –coins and some bills.
He redoubles his ringing effort.
A woman, SAMANTHA SHARTON, hurries toward the entrance. She is pressing one
hand to her head and frowning. If not for the obvious pain, she’d be pretty
– shoulder-length blond hair, athletic build, medium height. Instead,
with each clang of the bell, she winces. She approaches the BELL RINGER.

SAMANTHA
(finger to lips) |
| Shhhh! |
| SAMANTHA |
| Shhhh! (beat) Headache. |
SAMANTHA continues past the BELL RINGER. As she enters the store, the single,
monotonous note of the bell continues.
2. INT. LOBBY OF MEGA-STORE – CONTINUING
SAMANTHA hurries along, turning right toward the sign that says “Pharmacy.”
3. INT. PHARMACY SECTION OF MEGA-STORE – CONTINUING
SAMANTHA makes a bee-line for the headache remedies and selects an over-the-counter
product for migraines. She turns around and walks away.
4. INT. CHECK-OUT COUNTER OF MEGA-STORE – CONTINUING
SAMANTHA sighs and rubs her temples as she watches the teenage girl, SALES
CLERK, ring up her purchase.
| SALES CLERK |
| Bad one, huh? |
SAMANTHA nods.
| SALES CLERK (cont’d) |
| My mom takes this stuff from her doctor. (beat) It’s five eighty-nine. |
SAMANTHA
(hands over money) |
| Yeah. Me, too. I’m out. |
SALES CLERK
(handing back change) |
| Man, that sucks. |
SAMANTHA starts to leave then turns back.
| SAMANTHA (cont’d) |
| Is there a side exit? |
| SALES CLERK |
| Huh? Um… it closes at… uh… 6 p.m. |
| SAMANTHA |
| Damn. (presses fingers to temples harder) Out front… that…
(waves hand vaguely) |
SALES CLERK
(nodding) |
| The bell guy? Yeah. It’s for a good cause ‘n’ all, but…. |
SAMANTHA
(deep breath) |
| Thanks anyway. |
SAMANTHA exits.
5. EXT. BASIC MEGA-STORE FRONT – EVENING
The scene is silent. The stand with its kettle is in place, but the BELL RINGER
isn’t in sight. There is a quiet groan and the camera pans slowly toward
a shadowy corridor where vending machines and newspaper dispensers line the
walls. The groan is coming from the BELL RINGER. He is lying face down and blood
is seeping from his skull. His breath plumes white in the cold. One breath.
Two. Three. Four. His body shudders and we see one more plume of breath which
slowly dissipates.

ACT ONE
6 . EXT. BASIC MEGA-STORE – EVENING, AROUND MIDNIGHT
EDDIE WINSLOW is talking to a couple in their twenties. The YOUNG MAN is skinny,
dressed in military surplus type clothing; he’s a little ragged around
the edges, with pale, lank hair in a ponytail. The GIRL with him is dressed
in jeans and a plain long sleeve shirt, covered by a dark hoodie, with the hood
up. The YOUNG MAN’S arm is possessively around the GIRL. He gestures toward
an area in front of the store entrance. The area is deeply in shadow, between
a short outer wall and the wall of the store. There is a rank of the quarter
and fifty-cent candy and novelty vending machines.
| EDDIE |
| So you were leaving the store and just… came across the body? |
| YOUNG MAN |
| Yeah. It’s kinda dumb, but Becca an’ me… we always get
some of those candies. |
EDDIE
(nodding) |
| And the body was in front of- |
| GIRL |
| I’m never gonna chew that gum again. |
She breaks from her boyfriend’s arms and stumbles away to throw up.
EDDIE and the YOUNG MAN watch her go. The YOUNG MAN has an anxious expression
and he’s shifting from foot to foot.
| YOUNG MAN |
| Sorry. Neither of us has ever seen… you know. |
EDDIE waves a hand to say “It’s okay.”
| EDDIE |
| This officer (gestures to a uniform) is going to get some information
from you. |
| YOUNG MAN |
| And then we can… go? |
| EDDIE |
| You’ll need to come down and sign your statements, but… yeah.
You can do that tomorrow. |
The YOUNG MAN nods and goes after his girlfriend.
EDDIE walks toward the body. He grins at the figure crouched over the body.
JORDAN looks up. Her eyebrows dance upward and then she grins.
| JORDAN |
| Hey! I heard you decided to come back. |
EDDIE
(shrugs) |
| Yeah. Mayberry just wasn’t doing it for me, you know? |
JORDAN shakes her head and chuckles.
| JORDAN |
| You need help, man. |
| EDDIE |
| Least I’m better off than this guy. (beat) What can you tell me? |
JORDAN
(looking at body again) |
| First look? Blunt force trauma to the back of the head. Probably not enough
to kill him instantly. |
| EDDIE |
| You think he was hit here? |
JORDAN stands up.
| JORDAN |
| No. Check this out. |
She walks back toward the entrance, shining a penlight as she goes, drawing EDDIE’S
attention.
| JORDAN (cont’d) |
| Blood trail. From his… post by the kettle to where he was found.
And… (kneels again) there are what look like gravitational blood drops
under the kettle. |
JORDAN
(sly grin) |
| You sure you want my opinion? I’m the M.E. after all, not
a detective. |
EDDIE snorts.
| EDDIE |
| Yeah. Right. Come on. |
| JORDAN |
| I think he was hit with the kettle. |
| EDDIE |
| Anything in the kettle? |
JORDAN shrugs.
EDDIE looks in it and shakes his head. He looks around, his eyes narrowing
as he thinks through the potential situation.
| EDDIE |
| So… someone was trying to steal the kettle. Our vic wanted to stop
him. Only… he didn’t succeed. Our perp whacks the guy on the
head, empties the kettle, hangs it back up and drags the body over there. |
| JORDAN |
| And doesn’t notice the blood tr- |
UNIFORMED OFFICER
(off-camera) |
| Detective Winslow? Detective? Over here! |

EDDIE gives JORDAN a look and then leaves her swabbing the kettle.
7. EXT. FRONT OF MEGA-STORE – CONTINUING
The UNIFORMED OFFICER is holding apart the leaves of a poinsettia plant and
pointing with his flashlight. EDDIE approaches.
| UNIFORMED OFFICER |
| Look, Sir. |
EDDIE looks and does a double take. He exhales in frustration.
| EDDIE |
| Bag it and get it to CSU. There’s probably a thousand prints, but
maybe we’ll get lucky. |
8. EXT. BASIC MEGA-STORE – CONTINUING
EDDIE returns to JORDAN. She stands up, bagging the kettle swab.
| EDDIE |
| Oh, you could say that. (beat) Looks like the perp dumped the money. Bunch
of bills and loose change in the flowers over there. |
| JORDAN |
| Why would anyone steal the… and then …? (sighs) |
9. INT. BUG’S LAB – MORNING
BUG is standing next to a microscope. He’s in full research mode: lab
coat, instruments laid out, but his glasses have been flipped up on top of his
head. He’s looking at NIGEL with one of those “You are truly certifiable”
looks.
NIGEL is standing there, grinning, very enthusiastic, energy radiating out
of him.

| BUG |
| You know, you’ve had some bad ideas and some really bad ideas, but
this one… this one really takes the cake, Nigel. |
| NIGEL |
| Come on, it’s brilliant! |
| BUG |
| Brilliant is not the word I’d use. |
| NIGEL |
| Just think of it, Buggles. Getting into that Christmas spirit- |
| BUG |
| I don’t celebrate Christmas. |
NIGEL falters a little, but keeps trying.
| NIGEL |
| A chance to – to bring some joy to others- |
| BUG |
| Do you really think joy is what we’d be bringing? |
NIGEL is determined to ignore BUG’S protests.
| NIGEL |
| -earn the department a little much needed good PR – |
| BUG |
| We work in a MORGUE. We cut up dead people! |
| NIGEL (exasperated) |
| – and at the end there’d be plenty of wassail! |
BUG rolls his eyes and then gets a mildly thoughtful look.
| BUG |
| What is wassail exactly? |
| NIGEL |
| It’s… well, you make it with… oh, forget it. |
NIGEL thrusts a piece of paper at BUG.
| NIGEL (cont’d) |
| Here’s a schedule and a time for your fitting. Be there. |
NIGEL stalks away, leaving BUG annoyed, perplexed and maybe the tiniest bit
pleased to be included.
10. AUTOPSY ONE – MORNING
JORDAN is doing her autopsy of the BELL RINGER from the night before. She is
probing the head wound, peering intently at it.
WOODY is leaning against the door jamb, watching her.
| WOODY |
| Is it creepy that I think you’re sexy when you’re doing that? |
JORDAN looks up at him and shakes her head slowly.
| JORDAN |
| Creepy… kooky… all together ooky. (beat) Want me to keep going? |
WOODY
(grin) |
| Only if you do that finger snapping thing, too. |
She rolls her eyes at him, but lifts her fingers up and pantomimes snapping
a la “The Addams Family” theme.
He saunters over, looking down at the body on the table.
WOODY (cont’d)
(almost too casual) |
| This Winslow’s case? |
JORDAN looks up and gives him a suspicious look.
JORDAN
(hiding a smile) |
| Oh, nothing. (beat) Yeah, it’s Eddie’s case. |
WOODY’S eyebrows do that thing where they attempt to mate with his hairline
and he mouths, “Eddie?” Then he turns back around and fiddles with
a beaker.
| WOODY |
| The guy was robbed, huh? |
JORDAN is back to peering at the guy’s skull. She now probes with long tweezers.
| JORDAN |
| That’s what it looked like. (glances over shoulder) Only the money
was dumped. |
| WOODY |
| Dumped? Are you – I mean, is Winslow – sure? |
JORDAN
(shrug) |
| Either that or money is growing on trees these day. (beat) Or
poinsettias. |
| WOODY |
| So… a thief with a… conscience? |
JORDAN’S eyes narrow as she pulls something out of the head wound.
| JORDAN |
| Or a killer who wanted us to think it was a thief. |
WOODY shakes his head.
| WOODY |
| Why not keep the… What is that? |
JORDAN is eying a strand of hair.
| JORDAN |
| Hair. Blond. Kinda’ long. |
WOODY peers more closely at the corpse.
| WOODY |
| Not from the victim then. |
They both look at the body. The BELL RINGER is bald.
| JORDAN |
| I’d better get Nige to run this. (beat) You didn’t happen
to see him on your way in, did you? |
| WOODY |
| He was going into Dr. Macy’s office. |
WOODY doesn’t respond and doesn’t move.
| JORDAN (cont’d) |
| Something else? |
WOODY shifts from foot to foot.
| WOODY |
| Um… yeah. Actually. It’s kind of why I stopped by. |
JORDAN
(uncomfortable suddenly) |
| Wow, and I thought it was because I’m sexy doing an autopsy. |
WOODY gives her a look, that one that says, “Come on, Jordan, quit playing
around.”
| WOODY |
| You are. (beat) You’re also late for your follow up with Doctor
Sanchez this morning. |
JORDAN rolls her eyes and turns away, looking for a bag she can put the hair strand
in.
JORDAN squares her shoulders and faces him, trying to brazen this out.
| JORDAN |
| Woody, I’m fine. Okay? Fine. |
| WOODY |
| You don't think maybe you should get a second opinion on that? |
| JORDAN |
| I don’t need…! (beat) Look, I’d know if – if…
if something was wrong. |
| WOODY |
| You can’t be sure about- |
JORDAN
(strident) |
| I’m sure about it. Really. (looks at him, eyes defiant
but with a hint of fear) She said the chances of it coming back were minimal. |
| WOODY |
| She also said you need to get checked out regularly. |
JORDAN eyes him for a moment.
| JORDAN |
| I can run the test myself. |
WOODY glares at her. She pushes past him.
| JORDAN (cont’d) |
| These hair samples can’t. I’ve gotta find Nigel. |
As she rushes from the autopsy suite, WOODY stares after her, anxiety and concern
furrowing his brow and darkening his eyes. His posture and the firm set of his
jaw suggest the discussion isn’t over, no matter what JORDAN thinks.
END OF ACT ONE
ACT TWO
11. INT. GARRET’S OFFICE – CONTINUING
GARRET is sitting at his desk, looking up at NIGEL with much the same expression
we saw on BUG’s face. NIGEL is standing in front of the desk, looking
hopeful, but not quite as energetic as before.

| GARRET |
| I don’t think so, Nigel. |
| NIGEL |
| Just think, Dr. M. A chance to- |
| GARRET |
| Let me rephrase that: NO. |
| NIGEL |
| But – this is a great cause. And you know what they say… um…
this time of year. |
GARRET arches an eyebrow.
| NIGEL |
| Um...well, that is… ‘tis better to give than receive! |
| GARRET |
| And if you wanted money, I might agree. But, Nigel- |
| NIGEL |
| Look, Dr. M, it’s just that… these people… they don’t
have anyone else and for one night we could- |
| GARRET |
| - remind them how alone they are? |
| NIGEL |
| I was going to say make them feel special. (deep sigh) Look, here’s
the schedule and your fitting appointment. (beat) I did promise… |
NIGEL makes a pleading face.
GARRET glares at him. NIGEL slinks away, not noting that GARRET is studying
the list he’s been given and, rather than trashing it, places it on his
desk.
12. INT. MORGUE HALLWAY – CONTINUING
NIGEL is standing in the hallway, looking indecisive. He brightens when he
sees JORDAN coming his way.
| NIGEL |
| Jordan! You’re looking lovely this morning. |
JORDAN gives him a look that says she knows he’s up to something and she
doesn’t have time for it.
JORDAN
(slowly) |
| Yeah. You… too, Nige. |
| NIGEL |
| I wanted to talk to you about- |
| JORDAN |
| Can it wait? (off his hurt look) Sorry, it’s just that I need you
to run this hair. |
NIGEL
(trying to hid his disappointment) |
| Of course. Yeah. (beat) From the … uh… (he attempts one of
his conspiratorial grins) ding-a-ling? |
JORDAN glares mildly at him.
NIGEL, penitent, looks at the hair in the evidence bag and frowns.
| NIGEL |
| I only got a brief look at him, but I thought he was bald. |
JORDAN
(tight smile) |
| He was. That’s why I need you to run this. |
NIGEL nods.
JORDAN senses he’s still disappointed that she interrupted earlier. She
puts a hand on his arm.
| JORDAN |
| You wanted to ask me something? |
NIGEL breaks into a broad grin.
They begin to walk down the hallway, back toward TRACE. The scene slides to the
CONFERENCE ROOM.
13. CONFERENCE ROOM – CONTINUING
LILY is sitting across from a woman in her mid-thirties. The woman is red-eyed
from crying. She clutches a tissue in one hand, mopping at her nose from time
to time. LILY has stretched a hand across the table to the woman and the woman
is holding on to it with her free hand as if her life depended on it.
| WOMAN |
| I just don’t understand. He never hurt anyone. |
| LILY |
| Mrs. Howard, I know this is a terrible time for you- |
The WOMAN stands up abruptly. She begins to pace.
| WOMAN |
| He loved that – that … bell, what it meant. Every
year! Do you know how many years he’d been out there? |
LILY shakes her head helplessly.
| WOMAN (cont’d) |
| Twenty-eight! This was his twenty-eighth year. He’d never had any
problems. Not once. |
| LILY |
| I’m sure he was very… dedicated. |
| WOMAN |
| The police said it looked like a robbery. Why would anyone do that? It
wasn’t even his money. |
| LILY |
| Sometimes people do desperate things- |
WOMAN
(stopping) |
| He’d have given the person the money. If they really needed it.
He’d have opened up his own wallet… |
She sinks back down into the chair. LILY puts her hand out again and the WOMAN
grabs it once more. She starts sobbing again.
14. AUTOPSY ONE – MID-MORNING
JORDAN is finishing her autopsy on the BELL RINGER. She looks up as the door
opens. It’s EDDIE WINSLOW.
JORDAN
(wry look) |
| Good morning to you, too. |
EDDIE gives her an annoyed look.
| JORDAN (cont’d) |
| What I told you last night. Blunt force trauma. Based on the fracture
pattern, I’d say that kettle was the likely weapon. |
| EDDIE |
| That thing’s pretty heavy. Think a woman could lift it? |
JORDAN gives that a moment of thought.
| JORDAN |
| Depends on the woman. Someone athletic maybe. Above average height. Our
bell ringer wasn’t very tall for a man. |
EDDIE nods and glances over at the body.
| EDDIE |
| Care to give me a time of death? |
JORDAN
(one shoulder shrug) |
| Based on his basal body temperature, lividity and beginning of rigor when
I got there, I’d say between eight and nine. |
| EDDIE |
| Last night you said you didn’t think he died immediately. |
She shakes her head.
| JORDAN |
| He didn’t. He was probably hit about half an hour before he died. |
EDDIE
(nodding) |
| So… between seven-thirty and eight-thirty. (beat) Well, that fits. |
JORDAN looks up from stripping off her gloves.
EDDIE
(grinning) |
| I’ve got a lead. |
15. INT. CONFERENCE ROOM – POST-COUNSELING SESSION
LILY is watching the daughter of the murdered bell ringer leave. NIGEL stands
aside to let the woman pass and then enters, grinning at LILY. While still enthusiastic,
his cheeriness has taken a definite hit after his encounters with BUG and GARRET.
But overall his look is hopeful. LILY smiles at him and slides a piece of paper
in front of her.
NIGEL
(grinning) |
| So, I see you’ve had a chance to look at my little… proposal.
(beat) I just knew you’d want to- |
LILY
(regretful) |
| Oh, Nige! You know normally I would but this year… with Maddy and
all. |
LILY
(more regretful) |
| I just couldn’t. It’s such a busy time and we’d be out
late… and all those people… I’m sorry. |

NIGEL
(pleading) |
| Her first Christmas, Lil. Just think, years later, you could show her
the pictures, tell her how from the time she was a baby she liked to help
others. (encouraging grin) Just like her mum, eh? |
LILY chews her lip, obviously moved by this tack.
NIGEL is clearly encouraged by her faltering. He all but claps in glee.
| NIGEL |
| Great! Here’s the schedule and when you need to be there for your
fitting. You know, I bet they’ll find something for little Maddy,
too. |
LILY
(brighter) |
| You think? |
NIGEL is walking away, but grins over his shoulder at her.
16. PRECINCT INTERROGATION ROOM – LUNCH TIME
EDDIE WINSLOW is standing near the door. At the table a woman is seated. It’s
the woman with the migraine, SAMANTHA SHARTON. She is pale, her eyes red and
her face blotchy with crying. Her lips quiver.
| EDDIE |
| I’m giving you a chance here, Samantha. (beat) Tell me what happened.
I’ll talk with the D.A. |
| SAMANTHA |
| I told you! (glares at him) I don’t know what you mean. |
EDDIE crosses and leans in to her space. His voice is low and menacing.
| EDDIE |
| We talked to the cashier. She told us how you asked about another exit
out of the MegaMart. |
| SAMANTHA |
| Because I didn’t want to hear that stupid bell again! |
| EDDIE |
| Because you’d hit Mr. Day on the head- |
| SAMANTHA |
| No! Why would - ? |
| EDDIE |
| But you didn’t know if he was dead. You couldn’t run the risk
he was alive, that maybe somebody found him and he’d recognize you. |
| SAMANTHA |
| I didn’t do it! I swear. I don’t know – I didn’t
know anything about it until – until… |
She begins to choke on her sobs. EDDIE watches her impassively. Slowly, she begins
to calm her breathing.
| SAMANTHA (cont’d) |
| What do you want me to say? |
EDDIE
(smiling) |
| I just want you to tell me the truth. |
SAMANTHA sighs and looks down at the table.
END OF ACT TWO
ACT THREE
17. NIGEL’S LAB – SEVERAL HOURS LATER
NIGEL looks up from one of his many “toys” as JORDAN enters. He
flicks up his eyebrows in greeting. She gives him a head toss in acknowledgement.
| JORDAN |
| Whatcha got, Nige? |
| NIGEL |
| I’ve been comparing the hair Detective Winslow sent over- |
NIGEL nods.
| NIGEL |
| -comparing it to the one we found on our bell ringer. |
| JORDAN |
| Blond, medium-length, female. |
NIGEL makes one of his faces – the one that says “When will they learn?”
| NIGEL |
| Blond and medium-length, yes. Female, no. |
| NIGEL |
| Didn’t leave this hair on Mr. Day. (beat) Unless she’s hiding
even more than Eddie thinks she is. |
JORDAN takes out her cell phone.
| NIGEL |
| And I just so happen to have the perfect way for you to show your gratitude
…. |
JORDAN rolls her eyes at him.
| NIGEL (cont’d) |
| It’s only one nigh- |
JORDAN pushes through the door, ignoring him. He sighs.
18. INT. PRECINCT BULLPEN – SIMULTANEOUS TO HAIR ANALYSIS
Everyone seems to be in the bullpen, though no one is particularly busy. The
detectives seem to be doing paperwork, ordering take-out or surreptitiously
doing Sudoku puzzles. SANTANA gets up from her desk and wanders to the bulletin
board. She is drawn by a bright green flyer and begins to read. When she speaks,
it’s mostly to herself.
| SANTANA |
| Are any of them over there mentally stable? |
SEELY has heard her in passing and stops. He reads the same flyer.
| SEELY |
| That was rhetorical, right? |
SANTANA grins. They are joined by EDDIE WINSLOW who also reads the announcement.
| WINSLOW |
| What the hell? (beat) Oh, right. That’s gonna happen. |
CAPRA joins them. She smiles.
| CAPRA |
| I think it’s sweet. Reminds me of my childhood. |
Everyone else rolls their eyes at her.
| CAPRA (cont’d) |
| What? Geez! You all make Scrooge look cheery. |
LOIS CARVER is drawn by CAPRA’S exclamation. She comes over and reads.
| CARVER |
| Hmmm… I wonder if Townsend can pull it off. |
FRAMUS saunters over. She rolls her eyes at the flyer but then a thought comes
to her.
| FRAMUS |
| If he does, I hope there are pictures. The blackmail possibilities alone
could make it all worthwhile. |
The CAPTAIN comes out of his office and looks around. His face darkens.
CAPTAIN
(bellowing) |
| Unless that board suddenly lists the location of the FBI’s ten most
wanted, get back to work, people! |
They scatter and the CAPTAIN returns to his office. Surreptitiously, each detective
returns to the announcement board and pulls off a tab with a phone number to call
for more information. EDDIE’S phone rings. He glances down at the caller
i.d. and smiles.
19. INT. AUTOPSY TWO – CONTINUING
KATE is doing an autopsy. She is gowned, her hands are inside the cadaver and
she’s annoyed because she’s had to stop recording her observations.
She looks up from her work, glaring at NIGEL.
| NIGEL |
| You haven’t even heard what I was going to say! |

| KATE |
| I’ve heard about it. (beat) No. |
NIGEL
(wheedling) |
| Come on, luv. It’ll be… great. |
| KATE |
| Great? Let me see. Working all day then spending several more hours
on my feet, surrounded by people who in all likelihood can’t carry
a tune in a bucket, singing about an event that may or may not have taken
place about two thousand years ago. No. That’s not great. That’s
a preview of hell. (beat) And don’t call me ‘luv.’ |
NIGEL sidles up behind her and lays a hand on her shoulder.
| NIGEL |
| Methinks the lady doth protest too much. |
KATE glares at his hand and then looks back down to what she’s holding.
| KATE |
| The lady is going to protest this scalpel right into your hand if you
don’t move. |
NIGEL removes his hand gingerly.
| NIGEL |
| You won’t even think about it? For me? |
KATE rolls her eyes.
| KATE |
| I wouldn’t even think about it for – for Mahatma Gandhi. |
NIGEL
(irreverent grin) |
| Doubt he’d have asked. |
| KATE |
| Fine. Mother Theresa then. |
NIGEL
(undeterred now) |
| Right. Well… I’m going to leave this – this with you. |
KATE walks over with a beleaguered sigh and scans the sheet of paper. She looks
at NIGEL, aghast. NIGEL is exiting.
| KATE |
| Rehearsals? A fitting? And why the hell would I bring Binky? (beat) Nigel?
(realizes he is gone) Why do I always end up talking to myself in this place? |
20. JORDAN’S OFFICE – CONTINUING
JORDAN is working on a file – the bell ringer’s file actually.
She looks up as her door slams and a slight scowl crosses her face. The camera
cuts to the person standing in front of her now closed door. It’s EDDIE
WINSLOW, looking about as pleased as JORDAN.
| EDDIE |
| Jesus, Jordan! Do you have to make everything complicated? |
JORDAN
(bristling) |
| What? Me? What does this have-? |
| EDDIE |
| I’ve got my suspect in custody, practically got a confession out
of her- |
EDDIE waves a hand, brushing aside her concern.
| EDDIE |
| And then you and your – your “merry men” have to go
and fuck it up. |
| JORDAN |
| Hey, this is not down to me and my “merry men.” This is down
to evidence, Eddie. You remember evidence? The stuff that proves if someone’s
guilty or innocent. |
EDDIE snorts.
| EDDIE |
| Yeah, well, in this case your so-called evidence is wrong. Samantha Sharton
hit that guy on the head. She confessed. |
| JORDAN |
| You said she practically confessed. |
EDDIE shifts from one foot to the other.
| EDDIE |
| She’s giving me some bullshit story about a migraine, but that’ll
change. |
| JORDAN |
| Unless it’s the truth. |
| EDDIE |
| Just ‘cause it’s not her hair…. |
JORDAN
(taking a deep breath) |
| She had a migraine? |
EDDIE shrugs.
| JORDAN (cont’d) |
| Have you checked with her doctor? |
| JORDAN |
| Some migraines are so debilitating that she might not have had the strength
to lift that kettle. |
| EDDIE |
| She’s just using it as an excuse, Jordan! |
He closes his eyes and scrubs a hand over his face before shaking his head.
| JORDAN (cont’d) |
| Look… Eddie. (beat) Check it out. Okay? |
| EDDIE |
| And then I’m back to square one. (holds his hands up) I know, I
know. If that’s where the evidence puts me…. |
| JORDAN |
| Maybe not square one. (smile) One of my “merry men”
did find out the hair on the body was male. |
EDDIE is reaching for the door knob. He stops.
END OF ACT THREE
ACT FOUR
21. INT. JORDAN’S BEDROOM – BEDTIME
JORDAN and WOODY are lying in her bed. JORDAN is wearing on old BPD t-shirt
of his and we presume he’s wearing boxers as all we can see are his abs.
They are lying on their sides, facing each other, talking.
| WOODY |
| I think it’s… sweet. |
| JORDAN |
| Let me guess… it was a big Kewaunee tradition. |
WOODY
(a little prickly) |
| Actually, yeah, it was. |
JORDAN looks at him fondly, like he’s insane, but she loves him anyway.
| JORDAN |
| You liked freezing your ass off, trudging from- |
| WOODY |
| We wouldn’t be outside. |
JORDAN
(ignoring him) |
| -door to door hoping the people who lived at the next house wouldn’t
slam the door in your face, putting on these angelic faces when they didn’t
and then making them wish they had by singing out of key… for what? |
WOODY shakes his head in disbelief.
| WOODY |
| Where’s your Christmas spirit? |
| JORDAN |
| I made a gingerbread house to share at work! |
WOODY
(makes a dubious face) |
| Ummm. Yeah…. Back to this thing of Nigel’s. Why shouldn’t
we do it? |
| JORDAN |
| There’s no reason YOU shouldn’t do it. But me? No way. That’s
just how it is, Woods. |
WOODY
(sly look) |
| What if I promised you a… substantial reward for your participation? |
JORDAN
(grinning) |
| Substantial? (glances down) Proud of yourself, huh? |
He begins kissing her shoulder.

| WOODY (cont’d) |
| Are you telling me I shouldn’t be? |
JORDAN
(eyes closing) |
| Ummm… no. |
WOODY kisses his way down her arm and slides a hand under the hem of her t-shirt.
He slides down and his head disappears under the covers.
JORDAN
(dazed) |
| Think about what? |
| JORDAN |
| Is this my reward? |
WOODY re-emerges from the covers. He’s leering at her.
| WOODY |
| Call it a down payment. |
His head disappears again.
JORDAN moans.
| JORDAN |
| Okay, okay, I’m thinking about it! |
JORDAN is breathing heavily. It takes her a moment to respond.
| JORDAN |
| Fine, fine, whatever. Whatever. |
WOODY chuckles and then he moves back up her body. They kiss and slide beneath
the covers together.
22 . INT. DR. SANCHEZ’S OFFICE RECEPTION – FOLLOWING MORNING
JORDAN is standing in front of the reception desk, waiting for the secretary
to finish a call. JORDAN is fidgeting, checking her watch, glancing around the
reception area where a couple other people wait. She is just starting to turn
away, a look of relief on her face, when the secretary finishes her call.
A look of irritation mixed with despair crosses JORDAN’S face. She turns
back around.
| JORDAN |
| Uh. Yeah. I kind of… missed my appointment. Yesterday. |
SECREATRY
(smiling) |
| Happens all the time. (beat) Dr. Sanchez has an opening in about ten minutes. |
JORDAN opens her mouth to reply and then shuts it abruptly, as if remembering
something. She manages a small smile.
| JORDAN |
| Great. I’ll just… your waiting room has magazines. (beat)
Ours doesn’t. No need… I mean…. |
JORDAN looks like a deer in the headlights as she babbles. The SECRETARY gives
her a gentle smile.
| SECRETARY |
| We have the very latest issue of People. I think the cover story
is all about that orphan Brad is getting Angelina for Christmas. |
JORDAN smiles, more genuinely this time and walks to sit in one of the chairs.
She does pick up a magazine and flicks absently through its pages. From the way
she shifts in her chair, crosses and uncrosses her legs and checks her watch repeatedly,
we know she feels like the wait is an eternity, but the wall clock shows us it
really only is a few minutes before we hear:
| NURSE |
| Jordan Cavanaugh? Dr. Cavanaugh? |
JORDAN stands up and, pale, trembling slightly, heads toward the NURSE.
23. PRECINCT INTERROGATION ONE – CONTINUING
EDDIE is seated at the table, facing ETHAN. EDDIE is smiling at the young man,
who isn’t quite as grungy today, though his blond hair still needs a good
washing and maybe a cut, depending on your viewpoint. ETHAN looks mostly at
ease.
| EDDIE |
| Thanks, man. I know it’s a drag. |
ETHAN shrugs.
| EDDIE (cont’d) |
| I just had a couple questions about your statement. |
| EDDIE |
| Great. We’ll get it cleared up as soon as we can, huh? (grin) Oh
and while we’re clearing things up, we kind of ran into another problem. |
ETHAN
(face wary for the first time) |
| Problem? |
| EDDIE |
| It’s probably nothing. Happens all the time. But the thing is…
we found some evidence, hair, on the body. Now, I’m pretty sure I
know who did it, but this… hair… well, if I could rule you out
as the person it came from…? |
ETHAN
(slowly) |
| Um… yeah. Okay. I mean, I don’t need a lawyer or anything,
do I? |
| EDDIE |
| That’s up to you. It’s just a hair sample. |
EDDIE nods.
| ETHAN (cont’d) |
| Like I said, yeah. |
EDDIE gets up, walks to the door and opens it. NIGEL enters.
| EDDIE |
| This is Nigel Townsend. He’s going to get the sample we need. |
NIGEL
(quick glance at EDDIE) |
| Right then. Ethan, is it? Well, Ethan, this is quick and pretty painless.
Just got to pluck a few hairs. Women pay big bucks for this sort of thing,
right? |
ETHAN
(unsure what to make of NIGEL) |
| I guess. |
NIGEL uses the tweezers to pluck out two or three strands. ETHAN winces a bit.
NIGEL looks at the strands and then at EDDIE. NIGEL puts the hair in an evidence
bag, but doesn’t put away the tweezers.
| NIGEL |
| Geez, mate, sorry to say, but none of those were intact. |
| NIGEL |
| Well, see, we need the root. Sometimes the hair doesn’t come out
with it. I hate to have to do… Hey, I have an idea! |
Over ETHAN’S head, NIGEL and EDDIE exchange another look. EDDIE nods minutely,
telling NIGEL that the kid is buying it.
| NIGEL (cont’d) |
| Whyn’t you come stand here, by the window? The light might help. |
ETHAN complies. NIGEL looks the kid up and down and then plucks out another strand
or two of hair. He makes a big show of looking at them and giving ETHAN a pleased
smile.
| NIGEL (cont’d) |
| Works every time! (claps ETHAN on the shoulder) Thanks, mate. |
EDDIE walks to the door with NIGEL and indicates to ETHAN that he’ll be
right back. He steps through the door and closes it.
24. INT. PRECINCT OUTSIDE INTERROGATION ONE – CONTINUING
NIGEL
(his cheeky grin) |
| Worked, didn’t it? |
EDDIE nods in acquiescence.
| EDDIE |
| How long will it take to get a result? |
| NIGEL |
| I can do the rough comparison as soon as I get back. |
| NIGEL |
| If the hair is his, it’ll get you a warrant to hold him. DNA’ll
take longer. |
EDDIE
(nodding) |
| Thanks. (beat) And the other thing? |
NIGEL wobbles his hand back and forth.
| NIGEL |
| Hard to say exactly, but I’d wager he was tall enough. |
EDDIE has that look, the one that says he knows he’s caught the perp. He
prepares to go back into the interrogation room.
| EDDIE |
| The minute you have anything. |
NIGEL walks down the hall as EDDIE goes back into the room.
25. PRECINCT INTERROGATION ONE – CONTINUING
EDDIE walks over and sits down across from ETHAN again. He pulls a piece of
paper out of a file folder and slides it across to the young man.
FADE TO:
26. NIGEL’S LAB – ABOUT HALF AN HOUR LATER
NIGEL is smiling as he picks up the phone.
27. INT. PRECINCT BULLPEN – A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER
EDDIE is sitting as his desk, writing up some paperwork. He looks up as some
uniformed officers lead in the YOUNG WOMAN from the other night. He has a wry
smile on his face as she’s led to one of the interrogation rooms. He stands
up and starts to go in the same direction. He catches sight of JORDAN.

| EDDIE |
| Came to say I told you so? |
EDDIE cocks his head in the direction the young woman was led.
| EDDIE |
| You were right. My migraine sufferer was innocent. |
JORDAN
(smile) |
| In that case, yeah. I told you so. (beat) You find the real perp? |
| EDDIE |
| Sure did. Thanks to one of your “merry men.” (beat) Turns
out it was the couple who “found” the body. |
JORDAN nods sagaciously.
| EDDIE (cont’d) |
| The bell ringer was on a break. He came back and caught them trying to
steal the money. So the guy, Ethan, hit him over the head with the kettle;
he says harder than he meant to. (beat) They panicked, dragged his body
into that dark area and dumped the money. Then they figured if they were
the ones who “found” him, we wouldn’t suspect them. |
EDDIE
(grinning) |
| With Jordan Cavanaugh on the case? |
| JORDAN |
| Don’t forget my merry men. |
| EDDIE |
| I wouldn’t dare. (beat) Look, I gotta go see if his girlfriend’ll
’fess up so easily, but… uh… you wanna grab some lunch
when I’m done? |
JORDAN’S eyes widen for a moment.
JORDAN
(playing cat and mouse) |
| Sounds good. Let me see what Woody thinks. |
| EDDIE |
| Woody? (long beat) Hoyt. You… and… Hoyt. (shakes his head)
Never could stay away from cops, could you? |
She glares mildly at him.
EDDIE chuckles and resumes his course toward the interrogation room. He waves
at JORDAN over his shoulder. JORDAN smiles and resumes her own course.
28. INT. PRECINCT HALLWAY – CONTINUING
JORDAN is walking slowly, looking a bit anxious. She stops and knocks on WOODY’S
office door. We hear him call out to come in.

END OF ACT FOUR
ACT FIVE
29. INT. WOODY’S OFFICE – CONTINUING
WOODY looks up as JORDAN enters. He can’t help but smile at her as she
takes the chair across from him. It doesn’t take him long to realize she’s
nervous though.
WOODY
(trying to be light) |
| Here to congratulate Eddie on closing the bell ringer case? |
JORDAN shakes her head.
WOODY (cont’d)
(more worried, still trying to keep it light) |
| Here to accept his congratulations because it was the forensics that saved
him from making an ass out of himself? |
JORDAN smiles a bit, but shakes her head.
WOODY (cont’d)
(now really anxious) |
| Here to worry the crap out of me- |
JORDAN
(interrupting) |
| I saw Dr. Sanchez this morning. |

WOODY stops immediately. He goes pale at the implications.
WOODY
(slowly, stunned to a degree) |
| I thought you… weren’t…. You said- |
| JORDAN |
| Consider it an early Christmas present. |
WOODY
(cautious) |
| A present, huh? |
JORDAN smiles and nods. She swallows obviously. WOODY stands up and comes over
to her. He leans down to hug her. The angle is awkward but they clutch at one
another despite it. He places a light kiss on her hair before mouthing “Thank
God.” Then he kisses the spot just behind her ear and pulls back a bit.
He rests on the edge of his desk and holds her hands. They are quiet for a moment.
| WOODY (cont’d) |
| Why… What changed your mind? |
JORDAN shrugs. She takes a deep breath, holds it a moment and then lets it out.
| WOODY |
| You talked with Max? |
JORDAN shakes her head.
| JORDAN |
| No. I – uh – I… before I met you. Before he…(chuckles)
before he bought The Pogue… well, the reason he bought the bar. (takes
a breath as she realizes she’s not making sense) There was a chance
he had cancer. I was – furious when he didn’t tell me. |
WOODY
(gentle grin) |
| You and Max? Must’ve been a first. |
She shakes her head at him, but smiles.
| JORDAN |
| Then – after I found out… he wouldn’t – he wouldn’t
open the test results. Kept saying it was his life. But (shrug)
it was – it was my life, too. (long pause) I’d forgotten…
that feeling. |
WOODY nods and squeezes her hands.
| JORDAN (cont’d) |
| I’m just… not used to this. To – to owing someone else- |
| WOODY |
| Jordan, you don’t owe me anything. |
JORDAN
(smiling) |
| Yeah. I do. In a good way. We’re – I mean, there’s a
we now… and… I – I like that. I like… I
like not having to face everything alone. |
WOODY raises an eyebrow.
| JORDAN (cont’d) |
| I guess I just can’t break all my old habits all at once, huh? |
| WOODY |
| I like your old habits. (beat) Some of them. |
They share a quiet laugh.
| WOODY |
| I like being… us, too. |
There is another pause, as if they are both gathering their emotions. After a
moment, JORDAN checks her watch and stands up. She pins WOODY where he is, against
his desk, and plants a long, sensual kiss on him.
JORDAN
(grinning at his dazed look) |
| I gotta get back to work. |
WOODY nods distractedly as she slips away from him and goes toward the door. He
stops her just before she opens it.
She turns around.
JORDAN
(eyebrows arched) |
| For what? |
| WOODY |
| My Christmas present. |
She smiles widely.
| JORDAN |
| Just wait til you see what I got to stuff your stocking. |
WOODY blushes a bit while JORDAN exits. Then he shakes his head and goes back
to his chair to finish some paperwork.
FADE to:
30. INT. GENERIC EMPTY ROOM – AFTERNOON
NIGEL is waiting, sitting on a stool near a piano. He is whistling. There is
a clock behind him. He checks it. Then he checks his watch. He sighs.
NIGEL spins on the piano stool and as he does so, the hands on the clock spin
around. An hour has passed. Now two. NIGEL looks dejected as he finally stands
up and leaves.
31. INT. MORGUE HALLWAY – EARLY EVENING
NIGEL is on his way out of the morgue. He is wearing a Dickensian costume and
looking glum. He passes his colleague’s office doors, all shut, and lights
all still on. He considers knocking at each one, but stops, eventually squaring
his shoulders. If they’re going to be that way about it…he’ll
carry on all on his own.
32. EXT. NURSING HOME – AFTER DARK
NIGEL is walking, in his costume, toward the entrance to a nursing home. A
woman, the activities director, rushes out to greet him.
| DIRECTOR |
| Oh, Mr. Townsend, we were so worried you weren’t going to make it. |
NIGEL
(more glum) |
| Well, sorry to say, I almost didn’t. You see, I didn’t have
the best of luck- |
| DIRECTOR |
| I don’t mean to be rude, but the residents are very eager to get
started. |
NIGEL
(as glum as possible) |
| Oh dear. I’m afraid they’re going to be disappointed. |
The DIRECTOR gives him a confused look.
The DIRECTOR opens a door and ushers NIGEL in.
33. INT. NURSING HOME FOYER – CONTINUING
NIGEL stops. His face is a mask of blank confusion. His eyes dart back and
forth.
The camera pans around the room. Everyone is there - in Dickensian
costumes. Even Binky is there – dressed as a reindeer. Renée Walcott
is also there, arm through Garret’s.
| JORDAN |
| Geez, man, did you really think we’d let you down? |
NIGEL
(confused, happy) |
| I – um – no one came to… well, if you want to know…yeah.
Yeah, I did. |
JORDAN punches his shoulder lightly and smiles at him.
| JORDAN |
| Don’t be silly. Peace on Earth, Goodwill to men, all that. Who can’t
use a little of that this time of year? |
LILY
(holding Maddy) |
| And thinking of others. |
| GARRET |
| Even if it’s only one night, why not make these people feel special? |
| BUG |
| You don’t exactly have to celebrate Christmas to know that’s
a good thing. |
| KATE |
| And who cares if no one can sing. |
She looks daggers at NIGEL.
| KATE (cont’d) |
| I’m not sure Binky’ll be as forgiving though. |
NIGEL
(smiling with tears) |
| I’ll find him something special for Christmas. |
KATE’S eyebrows arch.
NIGEL (cont’d)
(a little pale) |
| Not that special. I do need my kidneys. |
KATE
(shrug) |
| Technically, you only need one. |
She grins to show she’s kidding.
| FRAMUS |
| And you did promise wassail. |
| NIGEL |
| And Wassail there will be! (beams at group) Shall we? |
| DIRECTOR |
| We’re going to start in the day lounge and then I figured you could
visit the patients who can’t leave their rooms. |
They all troop out. NIGEL, WOODY and JORDAN are last.
NIGEL stops JORDAN
NIGEL
(gentle smile) |
| You know, luv. |
JORDAN
(shakes her head) |
| Thank you. |
NIGEL
(grinning) |
| For what? |
JORDAN
(peaceful expression) |
| You know. |
NIGEL
(looking at WOODY) |
| I suspect Woodrow had a hand in this. |
WOODY and JORDAN exchange looks and both blush a little.
| WOODY |
| I just gave her some things to… consider. |
| JORDAN |
| He was very persuasive. |
Laughing, they exit.
34. INT. NURSING HOME DAY ROOM – CONTINUING
The camera travels from character to character. They sing a mixture of carols,
from the traditional to the more modern.
Someone suggests “Jingle Bell Rock.’ While singing, GARRET puts
out his hand to RENEE, who accepts it and they add a little dance to the vocal
entertainment. FRAMUS approaches BUG, but LILY gives her a warning look. FRAMUS
grabs the next male she sees – EDDIE WINSLOW, whom she has to haul out
to dance, but he does, to the laughter and smiles of the residents. Smiling
and singing, we also see WOODY and JORDAN dancing. She shakes and shimmies and
he holds her hand and watches, pulling her close during the chorus.
A resident requests “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause”. This is
the perfect time to show off MADELINE, who looks like a Victorian doll. As the
singing continues the camera slides toward the back of the group. WOODY and
JORDAN have found a doorway with mistletoe over it and they are taking advantage
of it.
SLOW FADE to:
35. INT. NURSING HOME HALLWAY – CONTINUING
The group is walking down a hallway. The light is soft, almost misty, as they
stop at various rooms.
36. INT. RUDOLPH ROOM - CONTINUING
This resident has her granddaughter visiting. The group sings ‘Rudolph
the Red-Nosed Reindeer” with Binky taking center stage as Rudolph. KATE
gives NIGEL a look that says “You’re gonna pay for this,”
but then she breaks into a wide grin.
37. OLDEST RESIDENT’S ROOM - CONTINUING
The group sings a medley of traditional songs, starting with “Little
Town of Bethlehem,” moving to “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,”
and sliding into “Silent Night.”

Everyone else goes quiet as JORDAN’S voice shines through and it becomes
a solo. Her colleagues smile. LILY leans into BUG, who kisses her hair. GARRET
and RENEE clasp hands. SEELY slips an arm around CAPRA and she lets him. Even
EDDIE WINSLOW allows FRAMUS to lean on him. WOODY stands a little apart, watching
JORDAN, enraptured by her. The scene blends so that WOODY’S face fades
slowly and we are left with JORDAN’S face – perfectly content and
at peace, if only for these few moments.
FADE TO BLACK
Next time on Crossing Jordan:
"Auld Acquaintance"
