Episode 85
Total Recall
(10-30-05)
Play by Play Synopsis:
Opening Scene
In Jordan’s apartment, the camera is scanning the room
and we see Jordan in the bed naked. JD brings in coffee
and wakes up Jordan. They talk and Jordan comments on
how she is not used to people doing things for her (like
JD bringing the coffee). JD says that maybe she should
think about getting used to it, and she agrees.
JD’s cell phone rings and has a call on a story. Jordan
does not want him to leave yet…she jokes about how he
must be too good for morning sex being that he was ready
to leave already. She bargains with him and convinces
him to stay for an extra 20 minutes.
The Police Station: Lu’s Office
Woody is in a session with Lu. They are talking about
Cal. Lu comments on how Woody might feel responsible for
Cal being a bit troubled, being as he basically raised
him. Woody changes the subject quickly when he notices
her Diploma on the wall and the fact that she just got
out of “Psych School” two years ago. Lu jumps right back
on track and tells Woody he needs to be serious and if
he doesn’t look at some of his problems and dig deeper
he is wasting both their time. Woody gets a call to a
crime scene and leaves.
Crime Scene One
Woody is updating Macy on the case. The victims name is
Robert Stockton, was 34 years old and went missing about
10 years ago. He was a teacher just about to get
married. A hiker found the body. Bug is the ME assigned
to the case. There is a knife found on the scene and
Woody takes it from one of the officers. Just then he
notices Jordan’s car pull up; she is dropping off JD.
Thanking Jordan for the ride, JD comes to the drivers
side of the car and gives Jordan a kiss goodbye. Woody
is watching this whole time and Jordan and he make eye
contact for a brief moment after JD walks away. Then
Macy comes to get the knife from Woody and notices the
media begging for a statement. He goes to give the
statement, but Woody suggests that he keep the knife a
secret for the time being. Then Woody runs into JD and
“tips” him, telling him that the victim was stabbed with
an ice pick.
At the Police Station
A young boy walks into the station and stops to talk to
Woody. He tells Woody that the victim was his teacher,
and he confesses to the murder, claiming that he did not
remember he did it until he saw the coverage on the
news.
At the Police Station, in the Interrogation Room
Woody and the boy are talking (while Lu is looking on
through the glass mirror). The boy is telling him he
doesn’t know why he did it. The man was his soccer
coach, he helped him in school, and he stabbed him. Mr.
Stockton was the one who encouraged him to try out for
the team, and was the reason he played. Woody points out
that the boy would have only been 10 years old when this
crime was committed. The boy agrees, but still sticks to
his story that he committed the murder. That is all the
boy can remember. Woody thinks that the boy is making
all this up because he could have just scene it on the
news and is just looking for some attention, and he
suggests to the boy that he just go get himself some
help.
Woody leaves the interrogation room and runs in to Lu in
the hallway. He asks her if she is watching him, but she
jumps back and says she was just observing the subject
(the boy) she was assigned. Woody does not think that
the boy did it, and tries to convince Lu. She believes
the boy represses the memory to avoid a traumatic
experience or abuse. Woody disagrees and thinks the boy
is just seeking attention. Lu wants to talk to the boy,
and Woody is not so sure about that. Lu just says she
will get the Captains permission to talk to the boy.
Crime Scene Two
Jordan and Nigel enter an apartment where there are two
dead people (a husband and wife…Ben and Eleanor Doyle).
The place is completely trashed. Jordan immediately
notices all the pictures around; there are some of the
Doyle’s together and also some of a little girl, even
though the apartment did not seem to have a child’s
room. Jordan also comes across an anniversary card from
Ben to Eleanor. She tends to be more upset than normal
at a crime scene, and Nigel notices.
The Morgue
Macy is in his office sneaking a drink into his cup.
Just as he gets the bottle back in his drawer Bug comes
in his door. He has information about the knife…it
matches the incisions in the victim. Garret comments on
how a man can fall off the face of the earth and no one
blinks an eye. He comments on how everyone is
dispensable and disposable. Bug disagrees.
While examining the body, Bug shows Macy that there is a
cloth residue on the body different than any of the
clothes he was wearing. Also, there was soap residue on
the upper torso of the body. The question now is “Why
did he have soap on his body if he was killed in the
woods?”
The Morgue: Trace Evidence Room
Nigel and Jordan are now examining the bodies of Ben and
Eleanor Doyle. Jordan notices some skin tissue from
under Eleanor’s fingernails and believes this will help
them find their killer. Nigel informs Jordan that the
pictures she saw in the apartment of the little girl
were of the Doyle’s daughter. She died of leukemia 10
years ago when she was 6 years old. Jordan comments on
if they (the Doyle’s) could get through that they could
get through anything.
JD enters the Trace Evidence room that Nigel and Jordan
are in and wants to talk with Jordan. He comments on how
Woody misinformed him on some information about the case
involving the knife. Then JD starts to whisper to Jordan
about wanting to ask her something, not sure if their
dating is public information yet or not. Jordan assures
him he can speak in a normal voice. JD continues to
invite Jordan to a cottage at Martha’s Vineyard for the
weekend. After a moment’s hesitation, Jordan accepts
JD’s offer. JD leaves the room and as Jordan turns
around she notices Nigel grinning at her.
Next enters Jeffery Brandau from the ADA’s office into
the Trace Evidence room looking for Jordan. He basically
just wants to know which one of them died first. Jordan
says that does not matter, they just need to focus on
finding the killer. Brandau informs them that they
killed each other. Jordan says there is no way, what
with the love letters and photos. Also, the screen in
the upstairs window had been ripped into. Brandau
informs Nigel and Jordan that there is a history of
domestic abuse between them. Both of them filed
restraining orders on each other, and they filed for
divorce 6 times in the last 10 years. Jordan still does
not believe this and thinks there is still a killer out
there somewhere. Brandau continues to ask which one of
them died first. Nigel’s computer beeps, and he informs
Jordan that the hairs clutched in Mrs. Doyle’s hand were
her husbands.
The Police Department
Lu is in an interrogation room with the boy. She
confirms that it is really hard to believe that it is
possible that he committed the murder because he was so
young at the time. He sticks to his story that he is the
one who murdered Mr. Stockton.
Woody is visiting with Mr. Stockton’s fiancée. He is
trying to find out if Robert had any enemies, or if
there was anyone who might want to hurt him. This entire
time people thought he just ran away, and she was
relived that he was found, and now she can try to
grieve. Woody thanks her for taking time away from her
family to visit with him, and she informs him that she
never got married. Woody promises he will find out who
did this.
Lu and Woody run into each other in the hall again. Lu
tells Woody that she thinks that the boy (Bryan Haley)
is telling the truth and that he killed Robert Stockton.
Woody disagrees, but goes along with Lu’s idea to take
Bryan to the crime scene to see if he can remember
anything that happened. He scornfully tells Lu that it
is probably a waste of time and that the evidence he is
looking for he is not going to find watching her
psychoanalyze anyone. That is when Lu figures out that
to Woody, this is all about him being right and her
being wrong….it has nothing to do with collecting
evidence.
Robert Stockton’s Crime Scene
Lu is talking to Bryan, trying to help him recollect
what went on the day that Robert was killed. Woody drags
Bryan to the crime tape, where Robert Stockton’s body
was found and pressures him to remember something. He
comments to Bryan on how this is all a joke and that he
did not do anything. Bryan sticks to his story that he
killed Mr. Stockton. Lu calms everybody down and lets
them know that these things take time. They all start
walking away from the crime scene when Bryan stops and
says he remembers the knife. He describes it to Woody
saying that it was his grandfathers, and it matches the
knife they found at the crime scene earlier that day.
They know he must be telling the truth because that
information was not released to the media.
The Police Station
In an interrogation room Woody is talking to Bryan’s
mother telling her that Bryan remembers certain details
of the crime. Woody shows her a picture of the knife,
and she says that her father (Bryan’s grandfather) gave
it to Bryan. She is obviously upset and begins to
breathe deeply. Her other son, Craig, is there and tells
her to calm down, and then informs Woody and Lu that she
has diabetes and heart trouble. She goes on to tell them
that Bryan was very upset when Mr. Stockton went
missing. They were very close…apparently Bryan did not
do very well in school and Mr. Stockton helped him get
more involved. Mrs. Healy begins to breath heavily again
and her son requests that they take a break.
In the hallway outside the interrogation room Woody and
Lu talk with Craig. He does not think that Bryan
committed the murder. He said that after Mr. Stockton
went missing that Bryan started getting into fights and
his grades started to fall.
Bryan comes out of one of the other rooms. Craig goes
running to him to see if he is doing ok. He assures him
that everything is going to be all right, and gives him
a hug.
Now Woody and Lu have a discussion. Woody comments to Lu
on how she is there to “rub it in his face” about how
she was right and he was wrong. Lu, however, says that
it is not about who is right or wrong…she thinks that
because Mr. Stockton was so close to Bryan that maybe he
was abusing him. This in turn would give Bryan a motive
for murder. Woody is not buying it though. Woody gets a
call on his cell from the morgue and they apparently
have a clue.
The Morgue
Garret and Bug are working together and inform Woody
that the reason Bryan can not remember the crime scene
is because the location in the woods where Mr.
Stockton’s body was found is not the crime scene. He had
soap on the entire upper half of his body which
indicates he was taking a shower. Bug narrows down the
soap to distributors to the schools. The school where
Bryan Healy went and Mr. Stockton worked was just a half
a mile from where the body was found in the woods.
The Morgue: Autopsy Room
Nigel comes into an autopsy room where Jordan is working
on Mrs. Doyle’s body. She finds that there is no
hemorrhaging around the wound in her chest, so it is not
the cause of death. Nigel says that the tissue scrapings
he took confirmed that Mrs. Doyle’s had Mr. Doyle’s skin
under her fingernails, and he had hers under his. So
obviously they were fighting with each other….but Jordan
is not buying it. She still believes there was someone
else in their apartment. Nigel can not understand why
she does not believe that they killed each other.
Nothing seems to match the wound on Mr. Doyle’s head, so
they think maybe CSU missed something. Jordan leaves the
autopsy room, and Nigel is left just standing there.
Jordan comes back in, wondering if Nigel is coming. Of
course Nigel smiles, excited that Jordan included him in
her adventure back to the Doyle’s apartment.
Ben and Eleanor Doyle’s Apartment
Jordan is still reading the cards and Nigel is looking
for the murder weapon. They can not seem to find
anything that matches the wound on Mr. Doyle’s head, so
Jordan thinks that maybe the killer took it with him.
Nigel does not really think that the killer would do
such a thing. Just then, Jeffrey Brandau comes into the
apartment. Apparently he went to the morgue and was told
he could find Jordan and Nigel at the Doyle crime scene.
He is confused as to why they are there and not in the
morgue determining time of death for Mr. and Mrs. Doyle.
Jordan tells him to take a look around at the trashed
apartment. She asks Brandau if he still thinks they
killed each other, and he says yes. Jordan sticks to her
theory that the killer came in through the screen. She
points out the anniversary card that Ben wrote to
Eleanor, and the fact that they survived losing a child
together. If they could get through that they could get
through anything. Nigel finally asks Brandau why the
DA’s office is so interested in this case. Brandau is
hesitant so Jordan threatens to stall time of death for
months. He cracks and tells them that his office has a
pool going to see which one kills the other first, when,
and how. Jordan is appalled that he has money on this.
Nigel on the other hand cracks a smile and asks Brandau
what he had his money on. Jordan just rolls her eyes and
walks away.
John Adams Middle School
Garret, Bug, and Woody get information from a school
official who shows them where the school showers used to
be. It is now an equipment room that was redone after
Stockton disappeared. Garret notices that the old
ceiling tile is still there, and Woody gets a sledge
hammer and breaks down the wall, uncovering the showers.
Bug comes in and sprays, checking for blood stains with
the UV light. They have found their crime scene. Woody
starts thinking about how Bryan could have killed Mr.
Stockton and dragged his body all the way out to the
woods. They then notice a laundry bin, large enough for
a body to be carried in.
The Police Department
Woody is looking though the old paperwork and finds that
an old laundry bin was found stuck in the mud about 200
feet from where Mr. Stockton was found dead. Bug then
comments that the towels they found in the locker room
matched the fibers found on Mr. Stockton’s clothing.
Macy states that there is a service road behind the
school that they must have used to transport the body,
and then ditched it when they were done burying the
body. They still can not figure out how a 10 year old
boy could have done this. Then Mrs. Healy shows up and
says she wants to confess to the murder of Robert
Stockton.
Police Interrogation Room
Mrs. Healy is telling Woody about how she thought Mr.
Stockton sexually abused her son. Woody asks her if she
has any proof of that, and she says she does not need
any proof. She felt she knew her son. She said she
called Stockton up the day he disappeared and made an
appointment with him. She then confesses that she killed
him. Woody asks where, but Mrs. Healy says she is done
talking until after she talks to a lawyer. Woody thinks
she is just trying to cover for her son. He tries to
convince her that there is no way the DA is going to
believe her story unless she can give them some details
of the crime. So therefore, the DA is just going to go
back to accusing Bryan of the murder. Mrs. Healy points
out that Bryan was only 10 years old, and the jury is
going to have a hard time believing he was able to kill
a grown man. (Lu was on the other side of the class
during this entire questioning)
At Woody’s Desk
Lu comes in and takes a seat in the chair next to
Woody’s desk. Woody asks her if she is there to tell him
she was right again. Lu comments that it is nothing to
gloat about. She wonders why Woody does not believe Mrs.
Healy killed Mr. Stockton. Woody goes on to tell her
that Mrs. Healy is just trying to protect her son, and
that she is trying to confuse the jury with more than
one confession. Lu then points out that maybe Mrs. Healy
did commit the murder and Bryan was a witness.
Woody’s cell phone rings and it is Macy on the other
end. He says that they have Stockton’s blood from the
laundry bin they found and someone else’s DNA on two
hairs they found. Macy says the DNA is mitochondrial,
which means it is passed on from mother to child. The
problem is they can not tell if it is Lorain’s hair or
Bryans.
The Morgue
Jordan is in an autopsy room with a brain saw cutting
open Mrs. Doyle’s skull. Nigel comes in to report to
Jordan what he found, even though he knows Jordan is not
going to like what he has to say. He found that the tear
in the window screen was made a couple weeks ago due to
the fact that there was microscopic bits of rust on the
ends of the severed mesh. Nigel comments this proves it
has nothing to do with their deaths. Jordan on the other
hand thinks it was just a way that the killer was able
to get it. Nigel tries to tell Jordan that there is no
evidence that anyone else was there, and that the
Doyle’s has a history of pounding on each other. Jordan
starts the bone saw back up again because she does not
want to hear any more. Nigel backs up and yells at
Jordan, telling her that she is not acting like herself.
She is not one to ride hunches, she goes where the
evidence points. Jordan then drops the saw and tells
Nigel there is more evidence than broken glass and
window screens. She points out the flowers, photos, and
love letters. Nigel then comes back with more evidence
pointing out the prosecutions, the divorces, and the
restraining orders. Jordan then calms down and gets a
sad look in her eyes. Nigel points out that he
understands why Jordan does not want to believe they
killed each other. Jordan pretends to not know what he
is talking about, but Nigel comes right out and mentions
her relationship with JD. Nigel moves in closer to
Jordan in a comforting manner, and points out again that
he really thinks the Doyle’s killed each other. Jordan,
who is now fighting back tears, finally admits that deep
down inside she knew that they did kill each other. She
tries to figure out why she let herself believe it
wasn’t true, and says that if she thought it wasn’t true
that it meant that “things didn’t always have to turn to
crap.” Nigel points out that it is just the extreme.
Jordan then comments on how “love turns to hate.” Then,
with sad eyes looks up at Nigel and asks why that is.
Nigel does not have an answer for her. Jordan goes and
leaves the autopsy room. Just before she is out the door
Nigel stops her and says they still need to determine
the time of death for the DA’s office. She just asks
Nigel to take care of it…and he does.
The Morgue: Trace Evidence Room
Bug and Macy are working on the Stockton case and Woody
comes in to get the update. Bug found that there was
only one way that the knife could have entered the body;
in a downward motion. Macy looks at Bryan’s height and
weight at age 10 and with that and the arterial
trajectory that Bug points out, they basically ruled out
Bryan as a suspect in Mr. Stockton’s murder. They now
turn their attention to Mrs. Healy.
The Morgue Hallway
Jordan is walking though with some coffee and runs into
JD. He asks her if she would be ready soon enough to
catch the 4:00pm fairy, but Jordan tells JD she does not
think she can go at all because she has to work. She
blames it on the case that she is working on…the DA’s
office is really pressuring her to wrap it up fast. JD
is obviously hurt, and tells Jordan that she is not a
good liar. He tells her if she does not want to do this
she should just say so. Jordan then goes back to the
story that she has to work, and that JD should
understand that considering his line of work. JD then
tells Jordan that he gave up a story because he though
they were more serious. Then JD walks away from Jordan
and out of the morgue.
Nigel was in earshot of the entire conversation, so when
Jordan continues down the hall he comments on how it is
a little early in the relationship to be sabotaging
herself. Jordan does not comment, but her face tells us
that she agrees.
The Morgue Elevator
Lily is on her way to the elevator, and when the doors
open Jeffrey is there. Lily gets a big smile and says
how nice it is to see him. Jeffrey was wondering if Lily
could help him with finding out the time of death of the
Doyle’s. Lily says that she will go and try to find Dr.
Cavanaugh, but Jeffery says that he was hoping to not
have to deal with Jordan because he finds her a bit
frightening. Just then, Jordan comes up behind Lily and
Jeffrey and says that she is going to assume they are
not talking about her. Lily then tells her that Jeffrey
got a message about the Doyle’s time of death. Nigel
then, from across the room, informs them that he was the
one that left the message and direct them all into the
autopsy room.
Nigel has concluded that they did not kill each other.
Jordan is excited about it, and Brandau accuses her of
putting Nigel up to this. Nigel then turns around,
holding Mr. and Mrs. Doyles’ brains in his hands. He
points out that neither of them are swollen. There are
rim fractures at the base of their skulls indicating
that they both died instantly. This proves that they did
not kill each other because they both died instantly and
they were not alive to hit the other. Lily questions
that there was no way no one else was there, and Nigel
points out that there wasn’t. Jordan then gets the idea
they are all thinking about this in the wrong way.
The Doyle’s Apartment
Jordan, Nigel, Lily, and Brandau are all in the
apartment trying to piece together what might have
happened. Jordan directs Brandau and Lily in to playing
Benjamin and Eleanor Doyle. Brandau and Lily role play
and act out a fight in the apartment. The end up
upstairs, and after thinking things through, they figure
out that Mrs. Doyle pushes Mr. Doyle into the bookcase,
and it starts to fall over. But he gets out of the way,
and pushes Mrs. Doyle away and tries to save her. The
both end up going over the railing and land on their
heads, dying instantly. Jordan makes the comment that
they tried to save each other.
Police Station: Interrogation room
Woody is questioning Mrs. Healy about the murder of Mr.
Stockton. Her lawyer is there with her and says that she
has given a statement. Woody tells her that he is giving
her bad advice, and then all of the sudden Mrs. Healy
collapses on the floor. Lu and Garret, who were behind
the glass, come running through the hallway and into the
interrogation room to help. Mrs. Healy’s other son is in
the hallway and also comes running into the room to see
what is going on. He points out that she is diabetic,
and he grabs her insulin. Macy tells him that he is a
doctor, so he administers the shot. Mrs. Healy comes
around and is doing better. Garret then asks her how
long she has been a diabetic, and she answers him,
telling him 14 years.
Macy, Woody, and Lu all leave the interrogation room,
and Macy tells them that there is no way she killed Mr.
Stockton. He points out that there would have been
evidence of synthetic insulin in the tox screen in the
hair they found at the crime scene. This leaves only one
other person other than Bryan who could have committed
the murder….Bryans brother.
Police Department
Macy, Lu, and Woody are trying to figure out their next
step. Lu tells Woody the reason Bryan can’t remember is
because he blocked it out to protect his big brother.
Woody is concerned that with so many confessions the DA
is going to laugh him out of her office. Garret points
out that Bryan is the key…that with the evidence of the
knife and the hairs will be proof enough that his
brother did it. Woody tells Lu that it is up to her to
get Bryan to remember what happened.
In the interrogation room Woody is talking to Bryan,
telling him that they know for a fact that he was not
the one who killed Mr. Stockton. Bryan says he does not
remember. Lu comforts him, telling him that he thinks he
remembers doing it because something happened to his
memory. He has blocked it out, and she assures him that
it happens sometimes when people see painful things. Lu
is going to try to help him remember. She takes him back
to the day of the murder. Bryan is starting to remember
that Mr. Stockton did not die in the woods. He remembers
that someone else was there. He then goes on to tell
them about what happened that day. Mr. Stockton had
asked him to stay after soccer practice. He waited until
everyone left. Mr. Stockton was in the shower, but then
he saw that Bryan was there. He stopped him and told him
that he was upset with his grades and the practices he
had missed. He wanted to know what was wrong….he thought
he could help. Bryan’s brother Craig was there, and Mr.
Stockton was mad at him. Then when Mr. Stockton turned
around, Craig stabbed him multiple times. Bryan had
remembered what happened.
Now we come to Woody roughing up Craig in the
interrogation room. He is pissed and accuses Craig of
being the one who was abusing Bryan. Lu breaks them up
and tries to calm Woody down. She starts talking to
Craig, telling him that she had figured out that
Stockton had found out about the abuse. And Craig was
afraid that Mr. Stockton was going to go to his mother.
Woody then chimes in about how older brothers are
suppose to protect the younger brothers. He can not
believe how Craig could do something like this. He is
pissed because Craig was going to let Bryan take the
fall for murder. Lu then has to jump in again to calm
Woody down.
The Morgue: Lily’s Office
Lily is sitting at her desk doing some paperwork when
Jeffrey shows up. He came to inform her that the bet
that the DA’s office had was settled and was paid in
full. He was not the winner, but pointed out that the
winner of the money was the only one that wagered that
the Doyle’s would die accidentally. He is acting a
little nervous, which Lily finds kind of cute. Lily says
she is just about to break for lunch, and Brandau asks
her if she brings lunch in, or goes out to eat. They
dance around the lunch topic for a bit, and just as Lily
is going to ask him to join her for lunch he slams the
door in her face and says good-bye. Lily is just a
little stunned by this.
The Police Department: Lu’s Office
Lu is sitting at her desk working when Woody knocks and
comes in. He asks her if she is going to admit it…and Lu
is confused about what he is talking about. Woody points
out that he was right and she was wrong. Lu wonders if
it is really that important that he is right. She thinks
they should just call this case a draw. Woody closes the
door and starts to act serious. He mentions what they
were talking about before about his brother. He says
that all the crap that has happened to him has made him
a better cop. Lu points out that it is not really about
being a better cop. It is the stuff that he does not
want to deal with that gets in the way of other
things…his life for instance. Woody was just afraid it
was going to jinx him one the job if he actually dealt
with things. Lu comments that it is a good thought, and
Woody seems to feel a little better.
Outside the Boston Chronicle
JD is just leaving work and Jordan chases him down. She
asks him who this “Martha” is and why they named a
vineyard after her. She is basically just trying to make
up with JD and tell him that she is ready to take the
next step in their relationship. She says that if they
leave right away they could get there by dinner. JD
jokes with her about wondering where her evil twin is.
Jordan confesses to him that whenever she starts to get
close to someone that this little voice in her tells her
to run. She tells him that it will probably happen
again. JD confesses that he never expected their
relationship to go smoothly. He knew she was a bit crazy
from the start. Jordan shows him the supply bag she got
for him in case he decides to forgive her and go away
for the weekend with her. There is not much in it and he
asks her what he is to do if it gets cold. Jordan
sweetly grabs his face and draws his lips to hers and
gives him a nice, gentle kiss.
