Lara's Review - Someone to Count On

I enjoyed this episode, and being able to watch it in reflection of what happens in subsequent episodes makes it an interesting episode.

There were a number of key character beats that were important for the events that occurred in the Secrets & Lies episodes, particularly with Lily.

Lily was interesting in this episode, it seems as if life at the morgue has taken a toll on Lily, and she seems to have lost her spark. Lily, a usually confident and compassionate person, has reached a cross roads in her life, and I think that her blaming the lack of ‘normal’ men in her life was more of an attempt to project her issues, rather than dealing with them. The tension between Garret and Lily was obvious, and the scene between Lily and Woody was hilarious. I feel bad for Lily in this episode, and I think her predicament was necessary for her story in Secrets & Lies.

This episode further developed the relationship between Jordan and Woody; they have an obvious chemistry, which is both romantic and professional. Woody allows Jordan to pursue her crusades while still managing to keep her from going to far, this is something that is particularly unusual for Jordan, it is something she needs, and Woody does it brilliantly. The final few scenes hint at the potentially romantic relationship between the two, Woody is obviously jealous when he sees Jordan and the ADA talking, and in the bar the conversation between the two characters suggests that Woody can read Jordan, he sees her and to some extent understands her, the bittersweet ending implies that there is more to come between these characters.

Garret is still a reluctant hero, and I think he will always be so. He will always do what is right and will choose his personal ethics over friendship when necessary, even if it could permanently damage the friendship. But in the end he will always show compassion to those who have done the wrong thing, this is most obvious in his final conversation with Gelber.

The character storylines are just one part of what makes Crossing Jordan a fantastic show, the other part are the cases that come through the morgue. Someone To Count On had two great cases, the bodies keep no secrets and the twists and turns in both cases kept you guessing until the end. These are the types of well written cases that make Crossing Jordan unique.

I enjoyed this episode because it not only had two interesting case plotlines, but also had great character beats.
