Episode 47
Slam Dunk (03-12-04)
Brief Synopsis: While serving as
a juror, Jordan derails the district attorney's open-and-shut case against a
reputed cop killer by disputing the medical evidence.
So you knew what was coming with the
opening scenes of this story. Jordan’s on a jury of an open and closed
case—well what was supposedly an open and closed case. Jordan has to make
things interesting though.
As the jurors go around giving their
vote (of guilty) they get to Jordan and she goes and throws a wrench in the mix
and votes not guilty. She has questions—which happen to be very valid
questions. She wants to see the autopsy report…and so the action begins. As
Garret said though—Jordan does things for a reason. She honestly felt something
wasn’t right. Though I am sure she enjoyed putting a thorn in Walcott’s side,
even if it was briefly.
Jordan is slowly poking holes in the
theory Walcott presented and turning the votes of a few of the jurors. So of
course Walcott returns the favor by trying to get Jordan kicked off the jury,
accusing her of breaking her oath. That doesn’t work but the jury does—as a
result—get sequestered and Jordan’s left to explain who that happened to the
other jurors who are none too happy.
While the jurors are discussing the case
Garret’s doing some research of his own. He’s not happy with the original
autopsy report which he calls unprofessional, incomplete and inconclusive. He
gets permission to dig up the body and reexamine it. Woody goes and interviews
the police officer who was first on the scene and we learn the cop had a
gambling problem. They reanalyze the video and prove the Ainsworth (man on
trial) was indeed caring a gun. The go searching for the gun in a creek, find
the gun, compare the striations and oh guess what…they don’t match.
By this point Jordan’s convinced all but
one juror to vote not guilty. After a little ‘confrontation of words’ even he
changes his vote. Ainsworth: Not guilty. Sometimes the system does work…
Nigel goes back to the video and low and
behold there was a third car at the scene that night. Good twist of an ending.
I wasn’t expecting the father to have killed his own son. I thought it was too
convenient and easy for it to be the cop, but I wasn’t sure who else would want
to kill him. It made sense that it was the father after I thought about it but
I guess I didn’t think the father would really kill his son. Bad me.
I was very proud of Garret. He really
stuck up for Jordan when Rene went at her.
The dislike and tension between Walcott
and Jordan in this episode was intense. Walcott did ‘thank’ Jordan at the end.
Jordan asks ‘for what’. Walcott says for standing up in there—Jordan did a good
thing. Jordan makes a comment that that’s what they were there for—to talk, to
discuss the case. I think Jordan was looking for Walcott to apologize for
accusing Jordan of discussing the case with Garret which is what she should have
done. Alas we I can’t hope for too much. Those two I’m afraid are always going
to be pushing each others buttons. What else would you expect with two strong,
opinionated women out to see justice served?
3 out of 5 Dead Bodies. Entertaining,
predictable story line with a slightly surprising ending.
