Episode 102
Shattered (01-21-07)
I’ve stared at a blank screen for a couple days now
wondering where to start with this episode. I liked it,
but I couldn’t really put any coherent thoughts together
on it. So I went back to the method of last week’s
episode and looked at the definition for ‘shatter’.
[
shat·ter: To cause the destruction or ruin of; destroy ]
Destruction, ruin, destroy—those are good words to
describe this episode. A young woman’s body is
destroyed, a young boys life is cut short because his
will to live was destroyed by a malicious predator—an
adult.
Woody’s case (side note: I so didn’t need to see all the
body parts, I don’t have a strong stomach) was
interesting to me because we got to see two ends of the
spectrum. A complete stranger to all parties involved
dies. Six people flee the scene. Others rant about the
inconvenience the dead body has caused them. Woody sees
the destroyed/ruin (there’s that word again) life of a
young woman. He cares. The others don’t.
His drive to find out what happened to the woman only
deepens the further into his investigation he gets. The
more he encounters blasé attitudes the more he cares.
It’s a nice contrast. I liked this more serious Woody.
It suits him better—more grown up. Hope he sticks
around.
Jordan’s case was much more emotional in the gravity of
the case. I liked the way Jordan acted. Extreme—yes,
but more people need to act this way. Child molestation
is a crime that should horrify the entire population. I
was glad the judge exerted his judicial power and issued
the warrant. Yes it might make him look bad, might make
Jordan look bad (not that she cares) when the case gets
to court, but identifying a child molester, even if he
gets off—that will forever be a black mark on his name,
and hopefully save who knows how many children from
future suffering.
Smart move on the writers half to throw Jordan and Lu
together right away (and not Jordan and Woody). Lu’s
nervous about working with Jordan—she knows how much of
a pain in the a** (said with love) that Jordan can be.
Jordan brushes it off and proceeds to work with Lu.
Lu’s a smart lady—she actually backs Jordan up. She’s
not as gun-ho as Jordan, but she’s there supporting
Jordan. I think this action was better than any ‘I’m
sorry’ Lu could have said to Jordan.
It’s nice to see the pre-Woody Lu. I like her.
Nigel and Kate—Now this is going to be fun to watch!
Those two send sparks flying (NOT in a romantic way—the
last thing I want is another romantic hook up. I had
enough of them last season to last me a life time.) I
am looking forward to more clashes. I can’t wait until
the two have to WORK together. That’s going to fun to
see.
I
knew the Lily news was coming. Saw that one when Chad
mentioned phone calls on the CR—actually his comment only
confirmed my suspicion. I had this feeling long before
then that this story line would pop up. I did like how
the news was delivered. And poor Bug—not exactly the
way I’d want to hear the news. (Even though I’m not a
fan of a Lily-Bug hook up) Here Bug has waited years,
finally he has a real shot and wham, another obstacle
thrown in his path. The poor guy is just plain unlucky.
Character Notes:
I
was none to please to see the return of Jeffery. It
completely threw me off guard. I wasn’t expecting him—I
groaned the instant he opened his mouth. He’s still a
wimp, he’s still whinny, and he still annoys the hell
out of me.
Ivers rubs me the wrong way. I’d like to go wipe that
smirk off his face. I don’t trust him—I don’t trust him
to look at the information presented and make a decision
off of that. I think he will search until he finds
ANYTHING he can to use against the morgue. He isn’t
neutral—he’s on a mission. His let me be sociable
attitude makes me more weary than trusting of Ivers.
I
ask this question—and maybe I’m missing the obvious—but
why is Garret under investigation? I can’t figure out
what he’s done to warrant the inquiry into the morgue’s
workings and staff. I did find it humorous that the
entire staff believes it’s Jordan under the
microscope—including Jordan herself.
Deleted Scene:
I
was happy the end of the scene didn’t make it into the
final cut. The ending scene was serious—Jordan’s entire
case was serious—if Lu had muttered those words the
intensity of the episode would have been lost, entirely.
Who Dies?
I’ve written this in black, so to read it highlight it.
This is just speculation, but I know there are still
some who don’t want to read/hear anything.
