Episode 106
Night of the Living Dead (02-25-07)
Sorry this is so late in getting up,
but there are a few (granted not many, but still some)
things in life that take precedent over Crossing
Jordan. And ALL of those few things have prevented me
from writing this review before now.
Okay so my thoughts, not to be
negative, but the episode as a whole didn’t work for
me. However there were many in between moments that I
enjoyed very much. It’s nice to have one central
focused case with the entire cast working together on
it. I have nothing against two storylines; I just do
enjoy the single storylines every now and then.
The flashbacks—I like flashbacks in
general as a means to tell a story. It’s a different
viewpoint. It’s especially fun seeing the characters go
back through the years down memory lane. You have to be
careful though when you do flashbacks. The first thing
I did as the flashbacks appeared was calculate when each
one happened and if it was indeed feasible for it to
happen. And not all of it worked. Garret and Renee’s
flashback being the most glaring mistake. (I know I’m
more obsessed than most—and I also know CJ’s history
down to the smallest details, so I pick up on the
mistakes.)
The filming of the flashbacks was
wonderful. The black and white contrast with color
worked beautifully. I love black and white. We see it
used so rarely these days, that I love it even more when
we see some great black and white medium.
I’d like a little more Renee please!
This was a pleasant surprise for me. I had no idea she
was going to be in this episode and have a major role at
that. It’s great to see some of the old semi-regulars
return. (Now where’s Seely? Please!)
I like Renee. Not because she’s
helpful to the morgue (anything but, she uses them to
get the results she wants, then backstabs when it suits
her) but because she adds tension to the cast. That’s
always been the problem for CJ. The original cast of
characters has meshed together so well that there’s not
longer that tension between them, so you have to rely on
outside characters to stir up trouble (hence last
seasons introduction of Jeffery, Lu and JD and this
season, Ivers). It’s been a rough time for CJ trying to
find tension causing characters that we like (or like to
hate as the case may be). Renee has always worked in
this role. I think Kate might be another tension
causing character that in the long run will work.
Shelly was a character you couldn’t
like, even if you tried. His begging, pleading came
from desperation and as soon as the situation had
changed in his favor his bad attitude returned and he
brought away nothing from his experience. How does one
person so drastically change? He was once a champion
for the good guy. I couldn’t help but think he got what
he deserved in the end.
Side Notes: Random things I liked
-
Nigel’s bandana.
-
Renee’s speculation on how
she’d kill someone.
-
Jordan covering Shelly’s
eyes before she went to autopsy him.
3 dead bodies out of 5.
