Episode 67
Necessary Risks
(11-21-04)

Brief Synopsis: Detective Hoyt investigates when a college fencing star is found dead in his room from an apparent suicide, but evidence suggests a possible homicide.

Jordan and Woody: This case was interesting.  I think the moral or theme behind it all was giving people a second chance—or you can ask the question: Does everyone deserve a second chance?

Three examples here:

1-     A 32-year-old man pretends to be a college freshman.  He goes back on a fencing scholarship.  He was married but his marriage fell apart.  He only got married in the first place because his girlfriend got pregnant out of high school.  He feels he missed out on his chance to experience college.

Was he right or wrong?  Did he deserve this second chance?

2-     A college advisor has a ‘relationship’ (I think it was more than just an affair) with one of her students.  She’d had a lousy marriage that fell apart and she’s not had any relationships since.  She connects with this student.  She finds someone to care for and someone who cares for her.  She latches on—desperate for someone to love.

Was she right or wrong?  Did she deserve that second chance at love?

3-     A guy Jordan once knew calls her up. Lily thinks he’s sweet and gives him Jordan’s number.  Jordan’s less than pleased.  All she remembers is his awful laugh and that he was a dork.  She avoids him the entire episode.  Finally at the end she returns his call and sets up a date with him.

Was Jordan right or wrong (for automatically judging him)?  She gives him a second chance.  Did she have to?  Should she have?  Or could she have just said forget—I remember what he was like no way I take another chance on him.

No I’m not going to give answers.  I’m sure we each have our own opinion of what is the right and wrong answer and this would be a great debate topic.  The point was made though that everyone has choices to make when it comes to getting a second chance.  Where you go from there…well that’s the question.

As a side comment I was proud of Jordan giving the guy a second chance.  So you go on a date.  It might not work, but at least she tried.  I found it interesting that Woody didn’t comment at all.  Either he’s given up on Jordan (highly doubtful) or he’s trying to let her figure things out.

Garret and Nigel:  Their case was a bit more serious and disturbing.  It’s sad that people would sell their organs just so they can make some money—to live.  It’s money that’s actually going home to another country where their family is living.

Things take gruesome turn when the man are killed and all their organs taken.  That’s murder in a cruel way.  These men think they’re giving up a liver only to never again wake up.

Garret was urgent yet in control.  Leave it to Garret to see the other mans situation.  He wonders what he would do if he was in another country and couldn’t be a doctor.  It was a nice touch Garret helping the man out at the end.

It’s fun to see Nigel and Garret work together.  Nigel has a way of pushing Garret’s buttons.  He has wacky ideas and voices all the crazy things Garret doesn’t want to hear.  He tries to get Nigel to keep it to himself but it doesn’t work.  With Jordan she usually jumps on board with his crazy ideas.

Over all a decent episode.
