Episode 13
Miracles and Wonders (1-21-02)

Brief Synopsis: Jordan wonders whether a dead man who claims to be saint really was one. Dr. Macy, still angry with Abby, puts his trust in her after trying to save a deer.

Something was missing and it fell flat.  The idea was there and it could have been good, but we were all over the place.  There were definitely some good moments, but I felt like the story as a whole never got told, just bits an pieces of it.

So we start out with the planets being aligned or something of the such which supposedly is suppose to affect everyday things—i.e. some weird things will happen.  Weird things definitely happened.

Faith: A belief on something for which there is no proof.

Jordan:  This was a VERY weak plot line.  There were holes everywhere.  However Jordan’s interaction with Paul and Max had some good moments.  Both tried to get through to Jordan that sometimes there are no hard answers and she just has to have faith.  Jordan responds: ‘I lost my faith the day I say mom lying dead on the dinning room floor.’  Max can’t get through to Jordan.  Jordan’s worried sick about her father and he finally breaks down and tells Jordan to let him live his life.  She doesn’t understand his choices and though she doesn’t argue, (too much) I think it’s going to be tough for her to honor her father’s request.  She pushed Evelyn out of his life (yes I believe she’s gone for good).  And she thinks she knows what’s best for Max.  He didn’t get rid of Jordan that easily.

Paul:  Jordan’s first love—who becomes a priest.  I liked him.  He didn’t let Jordan railroad him.  He didn’t back down or give in to her.  The moment was priceless when Paul tells Jordan there was no contest when it came to a decision between her and God.  That had to be an ego deflator.  Jordan’s strong and she’ll get over it.

At the end she goes and talks with Paul.  She’s worried sick about her father and breaks down.  She admits she doesn’t trust very easily.  Everything seems to go back to the day her mother died.  (Side note: There’s definitely a lot more to Jordan’s mother—as I thought there would be in an earlier review).  Her faith left her that day.  She can’t remember her mother’s voice telling her everything’s going to be all right anymore.  Jordan’s got a crying soul in her, but she won’t reach out for comfort.  And the one person she does reach out to Paul—can’t give her the answers or comfort she’s looking for.  He tells her to have faith—something that might be next to impossible for Jordan to find.

Hope: Desire accompanied by expectation of or belief in fulfillment.

Nigel and Bug: This case was just wacky.  The fact that the lady would even believe she married the ‘real’ Elvis…well enough said.  I made that statement on purpose.  I just proved one of the points I think this episode was trying to prove.  I took at face value that the ladies statement was wacky.  Granted her husband wasn’t the real Elvis, but she believed it and it was her hope that Nigel and Bug would believe her and understand.  She reached out in a moment of grief.  Most of us would sneer at the comment or out right tell the lady she was nuts.  Bug and Nigel do neither. And even when they confirm their suspicions they don’t tell her.  They don’t shatter her belief, her memory, her love.  Sometimes there are more important things in life than proving someone wrong (or proving you were right.)

The one good thing that came of this story line (which I thought was a waste of screen time) was we learned a little more about Nigel’s past.  His mother was a huge Elvis fan.  In fact Nigel claims she cared more about Elvis than any other person in her life.  It’s a sad moment for him.  Though his mind tells him Elvis really dies he thinks of the possibility that if he were still alive maybe his mom would be too (or at least have lasted longer).

Out of the three stories this was probably the most successful in getting it’s point across.

Charity: A gift given to those in need.

Garret and Abby: Those two needed to learn to communicate and low and behold I think we might have finally accomplished this.  It only took hitting a deer to do.

Abby’s not a bad kid, but she’s definitely rebellious.  She gets her stubbornness from Garret.  Garret picks her up from the police station and neither of them will speak to each other.  Garret goes so far as to tell Abby he no longer wants to be her father he gives up.  Then they hit the deer.  Abby suddenly grew up quick.  She was responsible caring and on a mission.  Father and daughter worked well together.

The finally have a real conversation where they both hear each other out.  Some bonding finally happened.  I think they each have a better understanding of one another.  I just hope Abby doesn’t revert back to her old ways.  So much progress was made.  Garret and Abby need each other.

Miracle: An extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs.

Theme: Belief.  Believe in miracles.  Have faith in life.  Don’t live life without hope.  Charity comes in a variety of forms.

Sometimes the universe conspires against us.  So go with the flow.  There’s a reason for everything.  You just have to believe.
