Mace vs. Scalpel  (04-30-06)

Play by Play Synopsis:

Teaser: Bug fooling around with his bugs—cleaning them in the glass case he had them stored in. Everyone is hanging around bored. There are no bodies to autopsy. They suggest they re-autopsy the man who came in earlier who died from a heart attack. Just to keep busy.

Crypt: Jordan and Garret talking—after re-autopsying the body. Garret says Abby checked her self out of rehab 3 weeks ago. Hasn’t heard from her. Jordan says he should call her.

The dead man they already autopsy has a bracelet on him with the name Louise on it. It has real diamonds in it. Garret leaves the office to go return the bracelet. He arrives at the door, knocks, no answer. He goes around out back. On his way there he sees a cat. He stops to pet it and realizes it has a collar on it with the name Louise on it. Walks through a gate into the back yard. There is a kid there. A man comes out. Talks to Garret, says the cat he saw isn’t his. Garret hears a clinking sound, turns around. He realized the boy is changed to the table he’s sitting at. Garret turns back to face the man and he sprays him with mace and hits him. Garret falls to the ground.

Act One: Garret comes too. He’s in chains strung out like a scarecrow. He’s taking in his surroundings. The boy is in there on a bed—chained to it. The man starts talking. He wants to know who ‘Louise’ is (the name on the envelope that Garret was carrying that has the bracelet in it). Garret tries to talk, but the man. He’s edgy and won’t let Garret talk. Garret asks what the man is going to do with him? Garret get’s angry. The man wants to know what is in the letter. Garret tells him to open it. Man says he’s a US postal letter carrier. He never opens mail. He stuffs the envelope in Garrets coat pocket and says he’ll be back. The man—Everett—leaves the basement.

Garret tries talking to Kyle (the boy). He ignores him. Kyle puts in a movie. Garret continues to talk to the boy. Kyle finally turns around and says his parents were bad people. He explains Mr. Everett watched him. Kyle was on his route and he said Kyle’s parents where bad people. Garret tries to talk with him. He won’t listen.

Lu and Woody are at a dump site. They’re on a stake out. They’re trying to catch the ‘little guy’ to catch the ‘big guy’ - The Flannery’s who run the big operation. They see their man. Woody and Lu go after him. The man leaves a letter/envelope on a car. They confront the guy and go after him. Man runs in front of trunk and gets killed.

Morgue: Lu and Woody bring the body in. In the envelope was money. M.H. was on the envelope. There was a guy in his cell with those initials. Nigel and Jordan laugh when Woody says the guy’s name. There’s a janitor who works in the morgue with that name. They say it can’t be him. He’s worked there for 20 years and is the sweetest man. They run the cell # in the dead guy’s cell phone. It comes up as a match to the janitor’s number. Woody says they’re going to need to talk to him.

Basement: Everett comes back. He explains he drove Garret’s car to the grocery store and left it there. Says that will be their only clue as to Garret Macy’s where abouts. Mr. Everett stops, he notices that a movie is misplaced. The boy lies, but then admits the truth. Garret talks to Everett (after seeing how he treated the boy), he says he bet Everett’s father abused him. Everett gets flustered. He takes Kyle out of the basement. Garret shouts out afraid what he’ll do to the boy…then he hears the piano start to play as it sounds like a boy practicing.

Act Two: The janitor is sitting at a table in the precinct. Woody is interrogating him. Lu too. The man says he doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Jordan comes in and tells the janitor not to talk. Lu and Jordan go at it. Lu says they’re gonna be holding him a while they get a search warrant.

Basement: Everett comes down. He explains how he could kill Garret. Everett says he loves Kyle and his only interest is in providing for him. He says he would never sexually abuse Kyle (like Garret thought). Then he starts talking about how it’s a shame that Kyle will hit puberty. They (meaning boys) start to change.

Morgue: Lily and Jordan are talking. The wedding is in 10 days. They’re talking about how crazy it all is—moving so fast and everything. She wants to know where she should sit Jordan. Jordan says between Bug and Nigel is fine. Jordan says congrats. She’s really happy for her.

Jordan in office calling JD. She gets voice mail. Wants to leave a message but can’t work up the courage. She hangs up.

Jeffery shows up at Lily’s office. He says he has a warrant to search the premises. All the police are there searching his place. Bug comes in and calls Jeffery an ass. Everyone is pissed. They get mad at Jeffery and Lu. They walk out of the morgue and head to lunch together.

Everett’s basement: He has a surgical kit. Everett wants Garret to ‘remove’ the possibility of testosterone so the Kyle won’t enter puberty…Garret gets mad at the man. And spits at him. Garret refuses to do it. So Everett says he’ll do it himself. He takes Kyle up the stairs. Garret says wait. He manages to stall by saying he needs practice. Everett takes out a gun and then removes the chains Garret is in on one hand. He then cuts himself and tells Garret to practice—by suturing up him.

Act Three: At a restaurant. Bug and Lily are eating lunch. They think the idea is absurd—that Manny could be involved.

Lily starts talking about Jeffery. She doesn’t understand why Jeffery does that to her. Bug points out it’s part of his job description. Lily says this must surprise him that she said yes and it’s moving so fast. Lily goes on and on. Lily stops and says Bug, you’re the best listener. Bug says he needs to be honest. When he said he was going to lunch he didn’t mean alone…Amy shows up. It’s a bit awkward.

Basement: Garret finishes suturing Everett and tells him it’s going to leave a scar. They start talking about the piano. Everett says he can’t play. Everett explains that his mother did. He said his mother moved away to a facility when he was four—get impression that something was off in his life while growing up. Everett switches topics saying there’s a lady on his route, he’s been thinking about taking her. She’d make a good mother for Kyle. He turns to leave forgetting to lock Garrets wrist back up. Garret slips his hand back in the chains pretending to still be tied up.

Morgue: In Jordan’s office. The police are going through her office. Woody comes in. She’s not too happy. He says he’s sorry. He leaves. Her phone rings. It’s Pollack. He wants to know why she called. He sounds a bit off. He says he’s got a deadline…but he looks like hell…Jordan breaks down a bit and says she just misses him.

Basement: Everett comes down he shows Garret pictures of his mom. He explains how there was a man there that beat his mom up. Said she didn’t move, the ambulance came, took her away and the nurse said server brain damage. Everett says that he’s trying to make a good home for Kyle.

Everett leaves. He has to go turn in his time card for work. Garret goes through book Everett brought down. There are all these news clippings of a missing boy named Johan. Garret calls to the boy Everett calls ‘Kyle’. Johan turns around when Garret says his name. Garret tells the boy he knows who he is. The kid looks at him with some hope and fear.

Act Four: In basement. Garret says they need to leave here right away. Johan insist he’s Kyle. Garret tries to get him to remember his parents. Garret says they loved him and missed him. Johan says no that’s not true. Garret gets him to remember. Garret says if he doesn’t then he’ll end up like the boy. In the coffin against the wall. Garret has the boy open the chest. Out fall a bag of bones.

Morgue: They’re clearing out. Lu comes up and says they found nothing. She apologizes. Lu asks if Woody wants a ride back. He says he’ll catch one back later. Lu leaves. Jordan makes the comment “I feel a cold draft”. Woody starts to explain but Jordan leaves. She doesn’t want to know.

Nigel show up in a ‘Free Manny’ t-shirt. Jordan talks about the fuse box in the bathroom remember a time she walked in the women’s bathroom and he was working…they pause. They know it’s not right. They go searching and find a bag of jewelry. They look at each other knowing something isn’t right and that Manny is guilty.

Basement: Everett comes in. He accuses Garret of lying to him. His mother is alive. He sees Johan and the bones. He gets mad at him. Garret yells at him to leave him alone. Everett hits Garret in the stomach.

Morgue: Manny comes in…then he sees the bag on Jordan’s desk. He stops. Manny explains that his son gambles and owed the Flannery’s $1000. He explained how his son was threatened and then his entire family. Jordan says he let them down. They all believed in him. She wants to know if she should call the police or if he’ll go turn himself in?

Act Five: Basement – Everett is cleaning up. Garret shows him the news paper clippings. Johan grabs the gun and holds it on Everett. A shot goes off. Johan runs and Everett goes after him. Garret gets free and goes after them. He grabs the gun on his way up the stairs. Everett comes up behind Garret and knocks him over. They struggle. Everett tries to strangle Garret. Garret drags him towards the medical bag and grabs a scalpel. Shoves it back into Everett’s neck.

Morgue: Johan’s parent show up. They see Jordan. Want to know where their son is. Garret shows up in other elevator with Johan. Jordan goes up to Garret. She asks if he’s all right. Jordan calls to him as he passes…Garret says it’s a long story.

Garret calls Abby. He says he had a rotten day and just wanted to hear her voice and asks her to give him a call.
