Episode 49
‘Is that Plutonium in Your Pocket, or are You Just Happy to See Me? (03-19-04)

Brief Synopsis: Armed men kidnap pathology resident Devan who is trying to notify a man's wife of his murder; an FBI agent is more intent on keeping a secret than protecting the city.

What a wonderfully entertaining episode, though I missed Jordan.  Where was she??

So we’ve got a new cast member, Devan Maguire, a spunky, wants to be working and in the middle of everything, pathology resident.  She came across as eager to jump into work—she didn’t really have time to interact with the other members of the morgue, besides Lily (and I have thoughts on that) so I’m not going to comment on that just yet.  I get the impression that she might cause her own bits of turbulence.  I know the morgue members put up with Jordan’s ‘turbulence’ but she just has this way about her…she can pull it off.  So we’ll see how Devan gets along with the others…

We start off with Woody and Garret arriving at the scene of a crime, both thinking the other called each other.  A body, Donald Brown, has been shot execution style.  They get it back to the morgue and Woody comments on this box thing over the door.  He’s never noticed it.  Garret and Bug explain it detects radioactive material, was installed after 9/11.  Woody comments how it’s nice to know it works…takes him a few minutes to realize it going off isn’t a good thing.  Suddenly the dead body becomes much more interesting—And the game begins.

Devan is off to Framingham to get the wife to idea her dead husband.  She starts to snoop around.  (I have to comment that Devan really reminds me of Jordan.  I know this is only one episode we’ve seen her in, but she’s inquisitive, bold, speaks her mind, strong…the similarities are there).  Anyway Devan discovers the house it fake, from the pictures to the lamp to the couch to everything.  Some guys break in, drug and kidnap Devan.

FBI agent Skinell shows up insisting that this is a matter of utmost secrecy.  They pull Garret into their plans.  And from there it’s a chain reaction.  Garret enlists Peter’s help.  Bug pulls the info out of Peter.  In walks Woody and Bug spills the information to him.  Lastly Nigel is brought in.  They need his computer skills.  And the circle wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t have everyone in on the case.

They head off to the hotel room.  I have to add (another) side comment here.  The whole scene with Woody getting the hotel key made me suspicious.  I knew the CSU guy was fake.  But why would he basically hand over the hotel room key.  It felt like he was personally leading Woody on.  Anyway, that set off alarm bells that something fishy was going on.  So Nigel gets some emails downloaded from the hotel room before they’re kicked out.  And of course it’s a meeting place.  So they go and they meet a lady who leads them to a locker which leads them to the plutonium.

Devan meanwhile is be interrogated.  She doesn’t know anything.  She hears the lady (supposed wife of Donald Brown – who we learn isn’t really Mr. Brown.  He’s some fellow from Phoenix AZ who’s in a coma) get killed.  When the ‘bad guy’ (whose name I never got) comes back in Devan’s frighten, but she’s starting to piece things together—just as we should be by now.

There’s no blood spatter on the man, yet supposedly he’s just killed the lady up close.  There always seems to be just enough radioactive material to have the machines that detect it work, but not enough to do any harm to a person.  The false FBI always seems to be everywhere Garret and his team are…some kind of hoax is going on…

Devan calls (after escaping her cell) informing Garret she’s a Logan Airport in Hanger 18.  They head off that way after her.  While this is happening a guy tries to get the gun from Devan and that’s when she puts together the pieces.  The guns are empty.  The plutonium is cold to the touch—it should be warm.  While the guys are in standoff position Devan walks out and drops the plutonium.  And wham, it was all just a game.  Garret’s furious (as he has right to be) at being used and throws a good punch at Agent Skinell.  Didn’t really do any good, because the game had been completed and the NEST team got the results they wanted, but it at least made Garret feel a little better.

4 out of 5 Dead Bodies.  Fun and entertaining we need these episodes every now and then.
