Welcome to The Crossing Jordan Encyclopedia—a site created for the fans of Crossing Jordan.  The goal of this site is to provide answers for any information you are looking for about the TV show Crossing Jordan.   I found there were very few CJ sites on the web and the few I found (all good sites), dealt with only one or two aspects of the show.  Featured on this site are in-depth character profiles, quotes, episode guides and reviews of each episode.

Everything you could possibly want to know can be found here in the CJ Encyclopedia—go ahead…take a look.

The Show

Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh is a sexy, smart and fearless Boston medical examiner with a checkered career past who is working under the guidance of Dr. Garret Macy.  Her unorthodox methods constantly test her professional and personal relationship with Detective Woodrow “Woody” Hoyt, who the coroners rely on to put in the legwork to hunt down the perpetrators of the crimes they investigate.

Additional support for the cop and the coroner team is provided by grief counselor Lily Lebowski, forensic entomologist “Bug” and criminologist Nigel Townsend.

The group works out of the offices of 4900 Beacon Street, Boston.  (Random Fact: though there is a Beacon Street in Boston there is no building 4900)

Crossing Jordan is from Tailwind Productions in association with NBC Universal Television Studio. Tim Kring is creator and executive producer; Dennis Hammer and Allan Arkush are executive producers.

The show is filmed at Universal Studios, Universal City California

Meaning

What does Crossing Jordan mean?  The main meaning is biblical. In the Bible, the Israelites viewed the Jordan River as an obstacle between them and the Promised Land, where God had called them to live. The phrase "Crossing Jordan" relates to the biblical text "Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them …" Joshua 1:2.

It's a long-standing Judeo-Christian concept that, when you die, you cross over the River Jordan (to the promise land).  The bodies that come to the morgue have ‘died’ and ‘crossed’ Jordan’s path—in which she’s made sure they received their ‘justice’ by catching their killer…or telling their story.  She allows them to move on peacefully (to the promise land).  It’s a play on words with Jordan’s name and the biblical meaning of the term.  It’s a clever title.

At times there seems to be a secondary meaning.  A pun on Jordan's name and her off-beat temperament—don’t cross Jordan or get in her path when she’s on a mission…At times it fits beautifully.

Please note: This description of the show’s meaning is my own analysis and not something ever posted by the people involved in the show or NBC.  I could be totally wrong in my description.
