Episode 41
Fire & Ice  (04-07-03)

Brief Synopsis: A teenage girl is killed in a drug-lab explosion, and her vengeful mother snatches the prosecution's lead witness; Peter sees a psychiatrist.

And we open the show with— Jordan- “You’ve got Walcott on speed dial?” Garret- “Don’t you?”

You can’t hide anything from this staff.  They always know what’s going on.  May I take a moment to comment on how great the characters are.  Everyone is different and everyone adds something to this group.  Lose a character and we’d lose part of what makes them so great.  That said I’ll move on.

I enjoyed this episode.  I hope we get to see Jordan and Walcott together a whole lot more.  The two of them send sparks flying everywhere.  They’re two passionate women whose goal is to put the bad guy behind bars.  Walcott goes about it very methodically and coldly.  She’s out to convict the killer so he can’t cause anymore trouble.  Very cut and dry with her.  She’ll do whatever it takes and run over anyone in her way.  Jordan is much more compassionate.  She sees the victim and in trying to help them she brings about justice.  Two very different demeanors—very different methods that lead to the same outcome.

Walcott is hell-bent on having her inside man (the boyfriend, Connor) help bring down Freddie Paxton.  She doesn’t care that he’s really no good.  She sees him as the lesser evil and hence is willing sacrifice bringing ‘justice’ to him in order to get the bigger evil.  Jordan on the other hand relates to the mother—reaches out to her—tries to help her.

Where as Walcott is sad (that might be too strong a word) over the death of the girl, she sees it as one more thing to use against Freddie Paxton.  Jordan sees an upset mother who’s just lost her only child.  Jordan goes to try and comfort her.

The mother wants to kill Connor.  She blames him for leading her daughter astray and causing the rip between them (when in all actuality the mother was just as at fault as Connor.  She was a weak and unappealing character).  When Jordan goes to visit her at the end, she just wants to apologize for some of the things she said earlier while trying to get the gun away from her.  As Jordan says—she would have said anything to get the gun out of her hand.  The mother kicks her out and is unwilling to accept any sympathy from Jordan, basically calling her a goody-two-shoe, out to fix all the problems in the world just to make herself—Jordan—feel better.  Jordan is trying to solve the problems of the world, but Jordan has a good heart and good intensions when she does this.  (It’s by no means a ploy for self gratification or anything else—as implied by the mother.  Jordan just really cares—we need more people like her. )  It was a mean-spirited attack on Jordan with the purpose of hurting her.  She succeeded.

Peter-Garret-Dr. Stiles:  At first I thought this was an entertaining plot line, especially with the grins Garret kept giving Peter—tormenting him with the thoughts that Dr. Stiles has just begun to dissect Peter’s brain.  Garret actually smiled—full fledge, showed all his baby whites!  I didn’t know Garret had so many teeth—you get my point.  I figured we’d learn a little more about Peter in this episode and that we did.  Peter was married, is now divorce.  Marriage problems and the pressures of medicine started his use of drugs, which is what landed him at the morgue.  He has a bit of a temper.  Things must have been really bad with his wife.  I look forward to learning more.

Lastly we get to Lily.  She gets a John Smith in her morgue who’s left a ‘will’ in three different languages for his body to be cremated and his ashes spread over Fenway Park.  However low and behold in walks his Tibetan family of monks who insists a sacred ritual must be preformed for him to move on.  Lily being Lily resolves the problem by letting the monks perform their ritual and then cremating John.  There was a sweet moment at Fenway when Bug and Lily were alone.  Bug consoles Lily telling her she was meant for this job (she still has doubts carrying over from previous episodes).  Bug gives her in inspiring speech and they get a little closer them WHAM!  They get interrupted. I should have seen it coming.  Oh well…maybe Bug with get his courage up again…in like another hundred years.  I cross my fingers and wait to see where it heads.  I won’t hold my breath because I have a feeling it might be a while—a long while—before those two move forward.

4 out of 5 Dead Bodies.  It was an enjoyable episode with some great personality clashes and revelations.
