Play by Play Synopsis:

Jordan in Stiles office playing with Howard’s ‘balls’. Stiles wants to talk about mass fatality incident. Stiles says that Jordan is his most ‘difficult nut’. Asks what happened two days ago.

Cut to Garret talking to Stiles, he asks why Garret lashed out at Lily.

Cut to Woody talking to Stiles, asks if Woody has guilt, says it’s a complicated emotion.

Cut back to Jordan, who says that guilt is not a complicated emotion.

Cut back to Woody, says he can still hear the blast

Cut to Bug, says he can hear the screaming and the crying

Cut to Lily, Stiles asks her how she stayed calm in the chaos, says she had a job to do

Cut to Nigel, says that in reflection he may have been a tad insensitive, Stiles says regret is an interesting emotion

Cut to Lu, says that it wasn’t that big of a deal, Stiles asks her if it was an ordinary day

Cut to Jordan, says that nothing about that day was ordinary

Cut to bomb site, in the T

Team arrive on scene, dead bodies everywhere, camera pans to dead children.

Garret tells Jordan to go back to the morgue

ATF agent says that no one has claimed responsibility for the bombing. Says that they were completely blindsided

Another bomb goes off, further down the tracks.

Opening Credits

At bombsite, area classed as safe, Garret says recovery must continue

ATF agent says incident will cause wide spread panic as other bombs may be planted around the city, ‘similar to London’

Team walks past a dead child, Lu stops and stares, Woody sees her.

Cut to Morgue

Woman walks in looking for her son, who was on the train, says she needs to see him. Charlie not in the body bag, Jordan tells mom that some of the kids survived and she should go to Boston General.

Cut to Jordan in Stiles office

Jordan can’t imagine what the mom was going through. Stiles says it must have been hard to focus on her work, Jordan says ‘no, I did what needed to be done’, Stiles says she sounded defensive.

Cut to Lily

Says she resents people telling her how to do her job, Stiles says it can’t be easy

Cut to Morgue,

Man walks in looking for his wife, she was the school teacher, says that she was meant to give up work a week ago, she was pregnant.

Cut to bombsite

Find silver flash powder, says Al Qaeda uses this powder, find timer, it is cheap, the bomber is probably domestic, Woody – ‘American’s attacking American’s’

Nigel says he may have found something, N-Caps, bomber used more that one pipe.

Garret asks Nigel to give him a hand, find dead teacher.

Cut to Garret in Stiles office

Stiles asks about his drinking, Garret says he didn’t have a drink

Cut to Morgue

Jordan sees Charlie’s mom back at the morgue, says that Charlie wasn’t at the hospital. Charlie had cancer, he is in remission. Mom asks why God would take Charlie away from her after beating cancer

Cut to Jordan in Stiles office

He wants to know what Jordan’s answer to the question was, she says she didn’t have one, says that ‘bad things happen, I stopped asking why a long time ago’. Stiles asks Jordan about her love life, Jordan asks if Stiles is asking her out. Stiles says he’ll take that as a no. Then asks her about her father, Jordan wants to know what this has to do with the bombing.

Cut to bombsite

Nigel reconstructing bomb, timer was faulty.

Lu has an anonymous letter from bomber, according to note there is a third bomb.

Believe it is in the transit system

Cut to Woody in Stiles office

Silent stand off. Woody says there is no excuse for what happened. Stiles asks if he thinks he could have prevented what happened, Woody says he should have tried harder, Stiles says he went above and beyond, Woody says it wasn’t enough

Cut to Morgue

Man identifies teacher. Lily tells Garret that man needs to see his unborn son, so man can name him and grieve. Garret doesn’t think it is necessary.

Cut to Garret in Stiles office

Stiles asks why Garret objected to Lily’s request, says that the man didn’t need to see his son.

Cut to bombsite

Woody and Lu find that someone pulled emergency brake.

Lu sees child’s backpack, Woody asks if she is ok, Lu says she is pulling herself off the case, she is sorry.

Cut to Lu in Stiles office

Stiles says ‘one shrink to another’ they are dealing with avoidance, Lu says she is not avoiding anything, Stiles says avoidance and denial, it is worse than he thought. Stiles asks why she left Virginia after being on the fast track, she says for personal reasons.

Cut to bombsite

Woody interviewing man who pulled emergency brake, he says all he could hear was the teacher screaming.

Cut to Morgue.

Bug tells Jordan that Charlie is not in the morgue or at the hospital. Bug and Jordan look through children’s personal belongings to make sure Charlie was on the train. Find Charlie’s jacket, blood on it, Charlie is injured.

Jordan talking to Charlie’s mom, says she promises to find Charlie. Bug says it is not their responsibility, Bug says they don’t have time.

Cut to Bug in Stiles office

Bug says it was a difficult day, he was under stress. Bug says he has changed, he has under gone a transformation, makes an analogy to the ‘lazy butterfly’, says he sees things he wishes he hadn’t and sometimes wonders if he could change back.

Cut back to Bombsite

Can’t find 3rd bomb. Nigel finds lubricant on blast caps, once again ‘lubricant saves the day’

Cut to Nigel in Stiles office

Nigel says ATF agent looked at him as if he was an ‘insensitive clod’, Stiles observes Nigel felt the need to make jokes. Nigel uses an Mary Tyler Moore show as an analogy, he feels the need to lighten the mood, Stiles says that humour is a reasonable way to relieve stress, Stiles tells a bad joke!

Cut to Morgue

Garret begins the autopsy on the pregnant teacher. Lily walks in, says the father needs to see his son, and Garret is wrong in saying he shouldn’t

Cut to Garret in Stiles office

Stiles asks about Abby, asks why Garret didn’t hold Abby when she was in the NICU, Garret was afraid she would die too… Abby had a twin brother who died at birth.

Cut to Boston PD

Woody asks Lu what is going on. Woody offers his ears to Lu

Cut to Woody in Stiles office

Stiles asks why he took time to ask after Lu. Stiles asks if Woody is seeing anyone, Woody says he is not exactly ‘seeing’ anyone, that it is in between ‘frustrating and weird’, Stile asks if it is anyone he knows.

Cut to Jordan in the morgue

Jordan is reading a piece of paper with a poem on it, found in Charlie’s pocket, reads a couple of lines, Bug says it sounds familiar.

Cut to Jordan in Stiles office

Stiles asks why she channelled her energy into finding Charlie and not the bomber, which Stiles thinks she would have ‘usually’ done. Jordan says Charlie needed her help, Stiles asks if it was the only reason.

Cut to bombsite

Team has a list of places where the lubricant is used. Nigel runs database search of people who work at places and those who have visited bomb-making sites. Name of man who pulled emergency brake comes up (Greg Hewitt)

Cut to morgue

Lily brings baby to father, he names his son. Garret watches on.

Cut to Lily in Stiles office

They discuss the bible story of Abraham, Lily says she doesn’t understand the story. Lily asks why someone would sacrifice someone they love, Stiles says its about putting ones feelings aside to do what needs to be done. Lily says she didn’t cry that day, she says that when she first started she cried all the time, now she doesn’t, she wants to know what is wrong with her.

Cut to bombsite

Nigel finds that Hewitt’s wife died in London bombings, they were on their honeymoon.

Cut to morgue

Bug says line from poem is by Edgar Allan Poe, he also found traces from coins in a fountain on paper. Jordan and Bug find a fountain by house where Poe was born.

Cut to outside Hewitt’s Apartment

Hewitt not there, Woody has blueprints of transit system, 3rd bomb at Stockton Station

Cut to Stockton Station

Find Hewitt attempting to defuse the bomb. Hewitt says bomb is about to go off, tells Woody and ATF agent to get away. Hewitt says he didn’t mean to hurt anyone, tried to stop it. Hewitt says it’s to late, Woody runs, bomb goes off, killing Hewitt

Cut to Woody in Stiles office

Woody says he should have saved Hewitt, Stiles says most people would say he got what he deserved asks Woody if he feels sorry for him. Woody says ‘he was a bad guy’. Woody says he feels guilty about many things

Cut to Boston PD

Woody and Lu talking. Lu tells Woody about her niece who died in a car accident; Lu was driving the car at the time. She says that a child in the train looked like her niece. Lu felt guilty so she moved to Boston. Lu kisses Woody, and then pulls away.

Cut to Boston Street

Charlie reading a book, Jordan arrives. Charlie says he should have died on the train, that he doesn’t want his mom to know where he is, Jordan says he is lucky to have someone in his life who loves him. Charlie says he has been feeling sick again and the cancer is back. Jordan says he doesn’t have cancer, because the blood test from his jacket shows his T-cell count is fine. Charlie’s mom arrives.

Cut to Jordan in Stiles office

Stiles says that a happy ending must have felt good. Stiles asks why Jordan found it necessary to find the boy, Jordan says that they had been through so much and all they had was each other. Stiles says it is a special bond, Jordan says to love someone unconditionally and to know that they love you back. Stiles says he must have made her think about her own life and how she lives life alone, Jordan says that maybe life is not meant to be simple. Stiles asks if she regrets the choices she has made.

Cut to Garret in Stiles office

Garret says he didn’t name his son, they pretended he never existed. Stiles asks if he thinks he is being too hard on himself

Cut to Lily in Stiles office

Lily says it shouldn’t be so easy to check her feelings at the door, and she is afraid she is getting too good at her job. Stiles says being good at your job is nothing to feel guilty about.

Cut to Woody in Stiles office

Woody says it’s not just the kiss and ever since it happened he can’t stop thinking about her

Cut to Lu in Stiles office

Lu says she felt safe talking to Woody, and she hasn’t felt that way in a long time. Stiles says once you open the door you can’t go back

Cut to Bug in Stiles office

Bug says you can’t pick and choose the emotions you feel, and without the bad ones you can’t appreciate the good.

Cut to Nigel in Stiles office 

Nigel telling jokes. Stiles says he is glad ‘you took something positive away from that day’

Cut to Jordan in Stiles office

Jordan says there is a plaque on the entrance to morgue in Latin, Stiles translates ‘this is a place where death is happy to help the living’. Stiles says being surrounded by death must remind her how valuable life is, Jordan says ‘everyday’.

Camera fades to black.
